Ok, Valentine’s Day is gone but not forgotten. It made me reflect on the support necessary in our demanding sport of triathlon. I thought of all the family and friends it has taken me to get where I am today. Let’s face it; training takes time and sometimes that that is valuable time away from family and friends. I am not an Ironman but I train with many of them and a topic of discussion is, “How do you make the time and how does your family deal with it?”
One February word sums it up. LOVE. So, maybe it's time to really recognize our family and friends for putting up with us. Maybe we can find a way to include them into our training. It could be a hike in the mountains or taking them with us to the beach/lake while you get an open water swim in. But don’t stop there, take them out into the water and splash around with them too. You’ll get more support by including them every once in a while.
You may also peak their interest in giving a tri a try. Another love I have found because of triathlon is cycling. I am now the owner of three bikes and love time out on the road or trails. Whether it is with a group or alone, the feeling of wind in my face, the mental strength of hill climbing, a fast descent, working on my pedal stroke or visiting a bike shop for that new accessory, the open road opens my mind and spirit. I know many triathletes that find these same feelings running and swimming.
By allowing yourself to open up, you open the door to love deeper. Let’s use February to acknowledge the people who support us. Take the time to thank them for being there for us and let them know that we will be there for them too. Find a way to do something nice for someone who needs it. Do something nice for a loved one, if for no reason, just because.
Once February is over keep doing it. Triathletes tend to genuine, supportive and trendsetters. Let’s use this opportunity to influence our communities and continue to lead. Share the love! I’m going to try and make everyday Valentine’s Day by adding some extra love into my world, please join me. Happy Valentine’s Days.
