Pullup Bar

I've got one exactly like that and it works great

I just got an Iron Gym and literally put it together yesterday. I did a few sets to test it out and so far, I love it. I plan on doing a few sets tonight along with my core work!

I use the irongym bar and it's great. It did put a few marks on my door fram, bo you might want to pad it a touch. BTW...I just saw these at Ross (discount store) in Texas for less than $20.

If I use adequate padding, do you think this bar will support a 220lb guy and still not damage the door frame?

I think you'll be fine. It's an interesting design - the weight of your body doesn't "hang" from the door, nor is it placed 100% on the frame (wood). The device transfers your weight against the front and rear of the door frame in a "squeezing" manner, with the device on one side being on the frame and the other side on the wall just above the door frame. (This part of the wall is braced with a plate when it is framed, so there isn't any worry about the weight being thrown against unsupported sheetrock, which would cause it to fail.) It's a good setup because it displaces all of the weight from being centric to one area.

I have a friend that is 6'2" and I would guess he's in the 205 range and he uses the same device regularly. It's strong.

Does anyone have the specs on what size door frame you can have for this one? I know some of them restrict it because of how they go up, and mine is a funky size (custom built).

you have a unfinished basement?  I wrap the "I" beam with two tow straps and fit a broken shovel rod in between.  It looks getto but it does the job, and much stronger than the $30 door bar.  Plus, it cost $0!!!  (I have all the stuff in the garage)  I can show you picture when I am home tonight. 

I installed one of these in my basement last year.   It screws directly into the exposed floor joists, or you could screw it into wall studs.  It is the most solid pull up bar short of what you'll see in a professional gym.   It will even support "kipping" pull ups...if you're into that sort of thing.

Only it's a 2x4 and some plumbing pipe. I'm thankful for a husband who's handy.

It mounts flat to the wall, we have ours on top of a double door jam.

I made my own as well. I spent $15 at home depot to buy some steel pipe (pre-threaded). I screwed it all together to make a wide, shallow "u" then mounted it to a stud in my garage. I wrapped the bar with some athletic tape so it's not quite so dang cold in the winter. Works like a champ and is incredibly strong.

Did you get the idea for your pull up bar anywhere? I'm thinking that maybe there should be a tutorial up online if there isn't one already.

perfect timing. I've been needing something to do pull ups on at home and the rafters in the basement are not enough to grip and hurt my hands like you know what. I was skeptical of the over the door one, but now it looks like I may be heading out to Sports Authority.

I have it and it works great with all the different grips.  When I'm done I can put it in the closet and it's out of the way.
