Training for my HIM has officially begun. And now officially been put on hold for two days. I know it's only two days, but grrrr!

I ran 9 miles Tuesday night--outside in the NJ chill. I was wearing a turtleneck and felt fine at the end of it. But then Wed morning, I woke up with THE worst stiff neck I've ever had. It hurts, it hurts, it hurts. I can't turn my head, I can't even tilt my head. I'm using icy hot, so I smell like an old dude with arthritis. I don't know if I slept on it wrong, or if it was the cold from Tuesday, but I wasn't able to do my bike yesterday or my run today.

This is a silly wussy injury for a triathlete. Should I just go ahead and work out anyway, or should I wait for it to get better?

What will be the quality of your workouts with the stiff neck?

Sounds like it would be a good time to take some rest. It is not like you are going to get in a good swim... or maybe it would be a good chance to work on that core rotation

Let the thing heal up and get back at it. If it happens again after a long run go check in with a doctor.

P.S. - I'm not a doctor

Funny I actually woke up Tuesday with the WORST stiff neck ever...so what did I do??? I went out and ran 5.3 miles in the chilly NJ air thinking that by warming up my body it would loosen it up. It didn't work but the run felt great. Last night still having a stiff neck I did a slow 1000 meter swim working on reaching with long slow strokes. I felt a bit better at the end and today my stiff neck is gone.

I would say try to do something that gets your muscles warmed up with some long slow movements. Good luck!

I find that swimming usually helps loosen up my back/neck if something is a little tweeked.  Not a hard swim, but an easy workout just getting my body going through the motions.

Maybe you overdid it a little.  9 miles is a long run during the first week of a HIM plan.  Plus your December volume was light, so you could have just tweaked a muscle.  Rest up and get back into it when you can move your neck.  Good luck.

Actually, what makes this whole thing even more frustrating is that my 9 miler felt freakin' awesome! I don't know if it was because I ran at night, but I felt stronger and faster than I do in the mornings. I felt like I could have done five miles more when I got home.

Oh well. Tryin' to listen to the bod. I will rest today, but tomorrow I'll do a run and see how I feel. Thanks all so much for the advice.

I would give it a few days. You will probably not have the best form for a swim or run, and you won't be all that comfortable on the bike.

Rest up.

Go to a Rolfer or active-release therapist. It'll be cleared up for you in 15 mins .

Yoga is a great way to stretch and gain flexibility which we often lose as we train a lot.

I apologize, but I have to focus on my own New Year's resolutions first before I participate in anyone else's!

This is totally wild......I woke up Monday morning and wasn't able to bend my left ear to my left shoulder. As of today I have a fuller range of motion but it still hurts like heck. I thought maybe I had slept wrong Sunday night. Of course I never thought to not run or stop lifting weights. Does the colder temps make us tense up when we run? I know I have a hard time relaxing my upper body when I run and I try to be aware of my upper body positioning.

I wonder if that has something to do with it. A 9 mile run, while sweaty and warmed up at the end, usually does start out sorta stiff and cold. But how often does it occur to any of us to stretch and warm up our necks??? lol. I'm notoriously bad about stretching anyway, although I've now trained myself to stretch at first sweat (usually about 5 or 6 min into the run)...

LOL!!!  That's a classic!

On a serious note, for what it's worth, I was super sore yesterday and today from leg strength training and a 2 hour ride in the saddle.  I did a swim workout earlier today and it seemed to flush at least some of the soreness out.

It was better this morning (the cold air and the neck!). Although I looked terribly goofy because I can't really rotate my head, so when crossing the street, I had to turn my entire body back and forth, a little reminiscent of Frankenstein. Thank goodness it was dark. :-P
