Subject: Running question - high HR
Well I finished my 1st 5K race on Monday! It's the first time in my life that I've run 3 consecutive miles. Finished in 26:37. But my HR hovered around 178 for the entire race. In the gym, I'm always > 170 during runs, and hit 188 during a sprint. Seems high to me. Do I need to slow down my pace to reduce HR, or is running mid-high 170's OK?

In a 5k my HR averages in the 187 - 191 range.  In a 10k I'm in the mid 180's.  For that level of effort you can expect to be high.

I'd highly recommend reading the "220 - Age HR" thread that is on the forum and does a great job of explaining heart rate training and testing.

Congrats on the race!  That's a great time!

No need to worry about it in a race.  But if you were around 178 in the 5k race and "in the gym, always > 170", you should probably do more easy running in training.  It's difficult to make good long-term improvements if you are running hard all the time.

You HR for a race should be higher then training. Training runs at race pace are good once in a while but if you slow down and therefore lower you HR, you can go a little farther and probably get more out of your workout.

Congrats on the first 5K! It only gets better from here.

Did my first 5k as well on New Years Day. I ran around 189 almost the enitre race. Peaked at 204 sprinting to the finish.

Not sure what my training HR is because that run was the first time I had worn a HRM.

Check out the thread that was posted above. It is very helpful.

I have never done a run in 10+ years of running that my heart rate was below 175. I can't run slow enough to get my heart rate lower than that.
