Subject: Saddle choice for Half IM to IM distances?

Ok, so my butt is aching alot after 30 miles on the trainer.  At 40 miles, I dying to get off.  What does everyone here use in order to stay on the bike for more than 56 miles? More importantly for all those centuries and 112 mile bike legs?

Thanks all!

For long distances, a hard thin saddle is best, preferably one, which has been broken in for a few months.  Stay away from padded saddles; the padding actually makes it more uncofortable because your seatbones do not make full contact.  There are plenty of good saddles out there, too many to single out just one.  To my knowledge there are only two saddle makes used in the Tour de France, Selle Italia and Selle San Marco so you might start by looking at some of their models.

I agree that gettinga few months on a saddle makes it easier to ride on.   FWIW I'm using a San Marcos Azoto Triathlon Gel saddle.  Not perfect but the best one I've found so far.

Some people use a lotion or a creme,  I've heard of one called Chamois Butter.  Maybe if anyone out there is using one of these cremes they can recommend one and tell us how much they help.

I've been using the Fizik Airione for a few months now and love it.  They have since come out with a tri model that looks great.  I guess, what's more important is what are you riding on?

I'm using a Felt Tri bike.  I'm looking at the Fizik Arione as well.  Is there a difference between the Tri model and the original model?  Did the Arione work really well for you?

I definitely love my arione.  It does conform to your body after riding on it, so it gets better as time goes by.  I am riding a road bike that sometimes has aerobars on it and sometimes doesn't.  If I had a tri bike I would probably look at the Tri model arione pretty hard.  The big difference between the two is the tri model has extra padding in the nose where you'd be sittong on in the aero position.  It also talks about it being seamless from front to rear so you can slide back and forth easy.  I'm not quite sure what they are talking about there as there are no seams on the non tri model.  The tri model has a silver cover as opposed to black leather.  Maybe you can move back and forth on it easy.  Whatever.

You do need a good saddle but remember when you are on a trainier there isn't anywhere near the movement of standing up, sliding back and forth, angling the bike in turning so you are resting on the same sit bones a lot more than road riding.  Your bottom needs time to get used to that distance just like the rest of your body.

I use a gel saddle too, but I think the best bet is a good pair of shorts and allot of saddle time... The problem seems to get better the more you ride.
