Subject: BT Ironman WI mini-camp June 6-8 Madison, WI

Last fall I started thinking about organizing a BT mini-camp for IM WI in Madison.  I floated the idea past a few WI peeps in the fall and posted a thread on it recently in the MN and WI forums to gauge interest.  I’ve even gotten interest from folks in GA, so while people are busy registering for ’08 races and planning their race schedule I figured I better post this if others are interested.

The dates for the camp are June 6-8.  Here is what I’ve been tossing around in my head for a schedule:

Friday, June 6   Arrive Madison mid-day/early afternoon.  Swim the course in Lake Monona.  I’ll give a detailed tour of swim exit, helix to transition areas (what’s a helix you ask?), and bike exit out of T area.  Followed by optional short run on bike paths around Lake Monona.   Dinner and beer in the evening.

Saturday, June 7   AM: drive out to Firemans’ Park in Verona and park vehicles.  Ride the course back into Madison and then reverse back to Fireman’s Park.  Riders then have the option of doing one or two laps of the 40 mile loop.   Optional brick run from Firemans’ Park afterwards.  Dinner and beer in the evening.

This strategy is different from what race day will be like because you will be doing the stick out to Verona backwards, but starting out at Firemans’ Park is much more convenient and less congested than parking in downtown Madison.  If there is a wide variety of racers, we likely will need to split up into groups based on desired pace.

Sunday, June 8  AM   Run one loop of the run course. Camp Randall stadium will be closed though, so you’ll have to wait until race day to experience running through that – pretty cool.  Breakfast after run (no beer with your eggs) and depart for home.

I plan on staying at the Super 8 in Madison which is just off of Interstate 94 at 4765 Hayes Rd.  (phone 608-240-9335). Its cheap, pretty clean, and plenty of restaurants nearby.  Machinery Row bike shop is right near the swim course for any bike-related needs, and I’m sure Verona has shops also. I'll try to work with Madison area peeps to see if we can get some support volunteers. Feel free to do all or just parts of the camp.

This could be the greatest event in the history of BT….well, maybe not, but it should be fun. If interested or have questions let me know in this thread.

with Lake Mills being on the First of June, this is looking very doable for me, at least the bike portion...............will have to see if my pregnant wife would let me do an overnight so i could do the run portion as well.  she has been very supportive of me wanting to get to madcity to get on the course (in fact she is even recommending it........think she is trying to get rid of me??) so i'm about 75% sure that i could be there for both!

If I don't end up doing Alcatraz I would probably be interested. How late can we wait to let you know?

MissKelly - 2008-01-10 8:20 AM How late can we wait to let you know?

Up until about 1 minute, maybe 30 seconds, before we hit the water on Friday    (It would be nice to have a head count by June 1, but peeps can jump in at the last minute if they want)

This could be doable for me but I will need to come from Connecticut so If I can get a cheap flight I am there. I was going to do a Lake Placid camp as closer to home and wouldn't have to get bike stripped down and a flight.

Will let you know closer to the date if I am a starter.

Thxs for organising..

I am very interested in doing this.  The bike transportation issue is probably the biggest thing holding me back.  I've never flown with my bike and I don't have a bike box - I use TriBike Transport for the races.  I will let you know what I decide, but this sounds like a great idea!  Thanks for organizing this.

Forgot to mention this in the OP, but on Fri afternoon if there is time we might jump in vehicles and do a pre-drive of the bike course so Saturday's bike ride will have some familiarity to it - lots of turns on the course.

Also, the transition area setup at IM WI is unlike any other IM, so the tour of the swim exit, helix and T areas will be a valuable experience for peeps that haven't done this race.  You'll be visualizing the helix all summer long...in addition to the hills and rollers we're going to show you on the bike course

I'm so there next year - Racing both Sat and Sun that weekend.

Hopefully you'll be hosting the camp again as you prep for that Ironman further West...much further west.

I'm about 70% sure I can make this work, but won't know for sure for a few weeks.

For those needing bikes......If I am able to make it I'll be driving up and can bring a spare 58cm road bike.

Dude, I'm upset that you wouldn't take me up with having a free stay at my house.

I will make sure that I don't run into a conflict with Little League baseball, but if I do, too bad.

I already foresee this as a great turnout!

I technically haven't either, but I don't want to drive to Racine...so there isn't much choice for a half around here.

I might come up for the second day... dumpster is doing Rockman, so I jockstrapping duties will supersede day 3... I'm not doing Wisconsin... (this year... but am aiming for 2009) but I'd like to do a ride and maybe a run or something... I'd probably drive up on Saturday and meet you guys... early as you want... Kiss

Have ridden the course several times before... will do 2 loops with who-ever is interested. Laughing

My wife does, too, sometimes, so no biggie there!  You would have been in the finished basement bedroom, out of hearing range.  You would have had to just watch out for our dog wanting to get in the room.

I'm just found out I can't go this weekend (darn....it would have been so fun).  AND I'm not doing Rockman.

I have a trip to Anguilla I can't miss out on that week/weekend.

Do an extra 40 for me!

Birkie,
I'm going to try and make this thing work for me.  I have to rearrange previously booked hotel, vacation leave from work, etc, so I need to be 100% sure you still plan on hosting this three day fun-fest June 6-8th.

Could you post back if this is still a solid date and a head count if you have one?

Thanks!  I'm looking forward to it.

I'm going to do the camp, even if its by myself. That's the only weekend that will work for my IM WI training schedule.

As for a 100% guarantee....no can do.   If my boss tells me at the last minute I have to be somewhere in the U.S. on those dates for a meeting, I don't have a choice but to pack my bags and go.  So far, I don't see that happening.

The only wrinkle someone mentioned to me is that the MC200 relay race starts on that Friday near Lake Monona, so parking may be tricky if we try to get in a swim.  But if we swim in the afternoon it might not be a hassle.   I haven't kept track of a head count, but you can get a rough idea by going through this thread.

I've commited to this weekend so there will be at least one other person there.  Are people going to be staying in a certain Madison hotel?  Kelly is coming also.  We were thinking of maybe camping, but honestly I'd rather be at a hotel with fellow BT'ers.

Then I'll go ahead and commit as well.  As long as I'm not the only one then all is good.

I'll post or PM you when I get a room.

My wife is coming up as well to run the Kettle Morraine 100k ultra-marathon that same weekend.
