Ok, I have read that mixing up your training and surprising your muscles with new exercises is good. But I also have read that consistency is key. I have been training very regularly since last March and have started a training plan (started Jan 1) that will build through July until the full Vineman in August. With this said I am leaving this Sunday to go to Colorado for a snowboard trip. I intend to board everyday for 5+ hours until I come home on Monday (eight days later). I am an experienced snowboarder with over 7 years experience. I have a workout planned for the Sunday morning before I leave and the Monday that I get back so that leaves 7 days with no planned workout besides boarding. I am trying to tell myself if I include one key workout midweek (a long run) combined with boarding I should not lose the fitness/endurance I have built up. I am also contemplating on trying to run more because a high altitude workout could do wonders for me, or so I'm told. I will have no bike or pool so run is all I have. I am also thinking with boarding and the key run I will do my body good taking some time off to recooperate from the stress of just starting an organized rigorous training plan. So my questions are...will my daily boarding and one key run session be sufficent to not lose my endurance I have built? Should I use this high altitude to do as much running as humanly possible? Does snowboarding complement tri training?

Yes, if you can.

Let me ask you this - do you really give a sh*t? If you enjoy boarding, do it, have fun, run if you can, and quit worrying about your training plan.

You will get some benefit just from BEING at altitude as you acclimitize, but this benefit will be lost 1 week after you return, so it's really a wash.

I wouldn't worry about running, just enjoy yoru boarding vacation. You're still getting 5 hours a day of activity which is more htan most people.

I don't want to jinx anything but still...here goes.....

Barring any injury (there, I said it), any "damage" you may do to your training program can be corrected in seven months.

Treat this week as a "reduced-volume" recovery week and have fun!

While consistency is key to building SBR fitness, with your race eight months away, I wouldn't worry about how a one week active vacation is going to impact your training.  You are planning on being on the slopes for 5+hours/day, which would be 35 hours of activity over seven days - no small amount of exercise.

I wouldn't worry about trying to run lots while you are there - in fact I would use this as a mental break and just enjoy the time boarding.  You also mention that you have been training since March, which would beg the question as to whether you had taken an off-season?  If not, definitely take the week as the mental break and time away from structure is important for athletes.

Finally, if you have started an IM specific plan for a race in August, I would suggest that you add a few races inbetween as eight months is a long time to focus on one race.  Obviously your annual training will revolve around the IM, however, having some smaller goals in between will help maintain motivation throughout the season.

Good luck,

Shane

Life is more than Swim/bike/run.  Life doesn't revolve around training/racing ONLY.  You need to do something you enjoy.

Enjoy your vacation. The mountains have great snow right now. Don't worry about training - you will have plenty of activity if you snowboard 5+ hours every day. Enjoy the mental break!

Now would a proper snowboarder worry about a training plan. I think not. But can you score some good weed in the resort?

Just enjoy your holiday ok.

From persoanl experience.. don't do it!!!  I did, and broke my arm.  First night on the hill too.  In a cast for 6 weeks.  I managed to do a sprint tri in June of that year, and got myself a "waterproof" cast so I could swim with it on and after a few weeks after the break i was running and biking (on the stationary bike at the gym).

I'm doing the same thing this weekend (although I haven't been training quite as long before hand), I'll run tonight before I leave tomorrow and I'll jump right back in when I get back. I start my HIM plan the day after I get back. I figure my legs are still working, my body is living at high altitude and I'm relaxing from the usual grind of work and planned workouts. It think overall it will do wonders for me.

As mentioned before... who cares, we'll be snowboarding, might as well enjoy a little break ever now and then!

Oh come on now, you could just as likely get in a bike crash and break your arm, trip while running and break it, etc.

This is my first few months actually training for something. But I've swam, ran and ridden my trainer more then I have ever before in these last few months.

It pales in comparison to how worked over my body is from a week long ski trip. Unless you are riding a few times a week I am guessing you'll feel the same way.

Whats with only riding 5 hours a day? Lifts usually open at 9 on weekdays and shut down between 4-5. I count at least 7 hours there, take an hour for lunch and you still have 6. Now if you eat lunch on the chair and if you make near to last chair you still have a run down after the lifts stop spinning, you can eek out 8+ hours. (in case it wasn't evident, I'm a skier before triathlete)

Life's too short to let it revolve around SBR. Head for the mountains!

X2, and whoever else said this in this thread.  I have IMAZ in April and I just took a week (week 10 of 24 week plan) and went scuba diving.  It was a nice break.   Triathlon is not everything

You are eight months away from your race, you ave ooodles of time, don't worry about it

Wow, lots of posts just overnight. Let me clarify myself. It is not like I was even contemplating not going on this vacation so I could stay at home and train. My main concerns were the high altitude training benefits (which was answered by adventurebear)...thanks. Whether not doing tri specific training will have impacts on my base endurance...As well as if the muscles in snowboarding complement tri training such as cyclng improves running. I mentally and physically cannot take an entire week break from training, I will go bonkers. So I am just asking advice to make the most out of a reduced volume break.

We have answered that. The general consensus has been - have a great trip, 5+ hours of being on the mountain a day is plenty of activity. Taking a break from swimming, biking, and running for 5 days is not going to harm your base or hinder your training. In fact, it will probably help your base and training.

It is all about goals. Period. If you want to be the best possible Triathlete you can be, then snowboarding is not a good thing to do. Risk of injury and time away from training.

However, if you are like most of us - go do it and do not sweat it. I want to be a fit happy person. I love SBR, but I also love snow skiing, snowmobiling, water skiing, pick up basketball, MTB, and more. I know I am not the best Triathlete I could be . . . and I am okay with that.

The one bit of advice I will give you is this . . . if you have a really big race coming up and it means a ton to you, skip snowboarding. You will be worried about getting hurt or not training enough. That will lead to you getting hurt or at least not having a good time.
