Because when you do, you still have your gut, but your sports bra becomes too big. TMI?

Seriously I used to worry about that. Then I bought a body fat monitoring scale.. Sure the weight stops going down, but if you're really working at it, the body fat continues to go down.. BF% is what I worry about now, nothing wrong with heavy muscle

On the same lines as what Brad said, stop worrying about what the scale says and let the mirror be your judge.

If you must burn more calories than what you take in to lose weight, then it should not matter if your 50 pounds or 5 pounds over when losing????

It seems more your overweight the easier it is to lose it. Why?

5 pounds!? I have 30 pounds to lose! The same @#$^ 30 lbs. I've been trying to lose for like 2 years. It just doesn't budge. And I work out like a fiend. Probably because I like to eat too much. Not unhealthy food, just bigger portions. It's all in the way you were brought up I guess...I'm trying to change though, does that count?

Eat more often... Best way to lose "weight" but more so fat.

And diet is the KEY!!! DIET DIET DIET!!! Increase protein intake, decrease carbs, decrease fat. Eat 5-6 times a day. Drink a minimum of a half gallon of water. The fat will come off.

I've actually had the best luck stripping weight/fat following a 40/30/30 diet regimine. The key to it is turning your body into a furnance and feeding it smaller doses of fuel more often.

Nutrawatch.com offers diet tracking, it's pretty basic, but even in the free version you can compare your diet versus 40/30/30

The less carbs you consume you lessen your ability to reach V02 Max decreasing performance especially in race situation. High protein diets may be the stuff that diet fortunes are made of, but I have lost 70lbs since June on a 60%carb, 30% protein, 10% fat diet (truth be told some days 80% carbs) and concentrating on the aerobic aspects of my training.

Funny thing about the 60/30/10 formula - the government suggests it in those health guides they give out. Go figure the same people who pay for our health care (well here in Canada they do) are suggesting that you get more of your calories from carbs than from protein and fat combined. Maybe it is because they want to save money on health care.

All that being said - other than on the bike is the 5lbs really going to be an issue when you race? Does it look like you need to lose 5lbs? If it doesn't look it maybe you don't need to lose it.

I read somewhere that you can knock off a second per mile (running) for every pound lost, (to a certain point).

It kinda makes since. You'll have more oxygen to use and you wont have to carry around extra weight. I wonder if having a few extra pounds would actually help in the swim portion, making you more bouyant.

Last summer I was running 50+ miles a week and still could not lose that weight. I'm not overweight at all but I can still see a little spare tire around my midsection. Its hard to get rid of.

My problem is that I do LOVE to eat.

Our bodies have mechanisms built in to fight losing weight.  It's evolutionary, dear Watson.  Though you can say that to lose weight you must burn more calories than you take in, that is only a descriptor of what happened, not a predictor.  Basically, your body can change its metabolism in response to the availability of food so limiting your food and increasing your exercise still may not help you lose the last 5 pounds since your body may lower your metabolism in response.

I think the best way for you to get off those last 5 pounds is to change up the exercise you're doing.  Keep your body shocked so it can't adjust and get more efficient at the exercise.  You want your body to burn calorie inefficiently to lose weight.

Oh yeah, it's also the holidays.  I've gained those 5 pounds so now I have 10 to lose.  Hopefully, some of that is water weight ...

Good luck!
