Subject: Heart rate strap ? for Garmin 305

I've had the 305 for a while now (maybe a year) but have never used the HRM function, always just used it for pace/speed/time/etc. I tried using the HRM function for the first time and the unit was not receiving heart rate data.

I was wearing the heart rate strap fairly snug just below my chest, and I did go in the settings to make sure the HRM accessory was set to "yes" and also tried to "rescan" or whatever that option was, all with no luck. Should I make the obvious conclusion and assume I need to change out the battery on the HRM strap?

That would be the cheapest and easiest possible solution to try. Not sure about the 305, but the 301 uses a ~$3 watch battery that you can change yourself. (Unlike the Polar that I had where you had to send the whole strap in for replacement to the yune of $50.)

There is also the outside chance that you might be having the same problem as KathyG who is on this board too.  She has been battling with Garmin for weeks now, seems her 305 will not receive her HR signals no matter what she tries.  I think she's still in the middle of sending it back to Garmin for a replacement.  You might send her a message and get her input on this too.

Also, check out motionbased.com as they have a forum that is Garmin-specific and there is a lot of good info there.

Thanks for the replies. New watch battery purchased at Radio Shack for $4.99 and it's now working like a champ.

One other thing is that the heart rate strap needs moister to work. I've had problems when I don't pre-wet the unit down.

I have heard this too but I have never had a problem with mine receiving HR even completely dry.  I know my wife has put it on for grins before to see her HR and it won't pick up anything.  Not sure if has to do with chest size and if the electodyes or what ever picks up the HR is not actually touching skin.

Mine works fine most of the time. I notice that I have trouble it my sports bra elastic and seam is too thick and perhaps blocking the signal...it's definitely not my boobs getting in the way! LOL!

Thanks for the post...I thought it was just me.  I've never been able to get my HR strap to work on my Garmin 305.  My first thought was to replace the battery, but since I had never used it before I figured it couldn't be the battery!  I guess I need to go to Radio Shack.  If that doesn't work, I'll have to send it back.  I just don't want to be without it!  I've gotten spoiled!  BTW, boobs aren't an issue for me either...darn it!
