Subject: Ever Heard of Stress Fracture's on Pubic Bone?
I didn't until yesterday. MRI showed 2 stress fractures on my pubic bone. No running for 6 weeks but Ortho says I can ride and swim as long as there is NO pain.

Has anyone every heard of stress fractures on pubic bone before? This was even rare for my Ortho. Was 6 weeks off enough?

I'm hoping this is a blessing in disguise as I'll focus on bike and swim and get ready for the heavy training volume for IMFL.

The answer to this post is either "Way to Go!" or "dang...sorry about that"

Seriously, how does one have that happen? The bike??

My first thought was if shin splints was caused by too much pounding of the feet then this stress fracture might be caused by to much pounding of ....

I've never heard of this but after a little while on Google it appears that it isn't uncommon but typically happens to women athletes. The military sees this during basic training due to all the running and backpacking the women are put through.

I couldn't read too much since it sounds painful and I hope you heal quickly.

Doing some research and found the following: not good.

Pelvic stress fracture
Pelvic stress fractures usually are found in long-distance runners and involve the pubic ramus (13). Pain is reported in the inguinal, perineal, or adductor region after an increase in training level. Physical examination usually demonstrates an antalgic gait, a full range of motion, pain to palpation over the pubic ramus, and a positive "standing sign" (ie, an inability to stand unsupported on the affected side). Radiographs may not show changes for 4 to 6 weeks; findings are an irregular cortical margin or callus formation. Bone scanning is diagnostic. Treatment is rest followed by a gradual return to activity. Healing may take 3 to 5 months.

I would definitely pay attention to the pain when biking, I would think that could aggravate it too, nothing wrong with swimming unless you push off the wall too hard.  Remember to recover and don't stress your body so it can heal.

Dude. I feel for you. This happened to me in 2005- stress fracture of the pubic remus (pubic bone) on my left side. I thought at first it was a very bad pulled muscle in my groin. For about 2 months I would stop running for a few days and then start back up again- the pain got worse and worse. I had an MRI confirm it in March that year that I had a stress fracture in my left pubic bone. I layed off the running and continued biking and swimming. I felt discomfort during most of that activity and even when I made turns while walking. Shoot... I felt it if I was laying in bed on my side and simply made a lateral movement with my leg. It sucked..... Fast forward to June of 2005- I got a 2nd MRI and that showed that the injury hadn't healed AT ALL. At that point the doctor told me to shut completely down- no swimming, biking, lifting (I did very light core exercises), and obviously dont' even think about running.

I heard all the jokes from my friends about getting it from 'overuse'..... You'll get that all the time I'm sure. Anyway- not to be a downer, but it will take a while for that to heal- MUCH longer than a stress fracture in your foot or leg..... In my case, I had to basically take the entire season off..... 11 months in total it took too heal. Part of that was my fault. I kept trying to 'come back' or test it too soon. The one thing it caused me to do is reflect on the years leading up to the injury. Since '99, I had done 25 marathons and 3 Ironmans (countless 1/2 marathons and other races). It was too much over time and my body finally broke.... It changed the way I train and plan races. The good thing is- I'm 37 now and faster than I've ever been before that injury, so.... the good news is- you will get through it and you will come back stronger. PM me if you want to discuss more or have questions.

I feel like I have this going on right now. My baby is due anyday now and I am in some serious pelvic and pubic bone pain!

On a serious note, sorry this has happened. Sounds very painful.

Any ideas on what caused it for you?  Did you really ramp up your running?  New shoe model?  Old shoes with a lot of miles?  Running on concrete/paving all the time?  Running gait analysis?

It sucks that happened, but if there is a way for others to learn from it and help avoid running into themselves it could be helpful.

Take it easy and heal up!!

I think I'm going to start an aquajogging support group. We don't discriminate; all injuries are welcome .

In all seriousness, though, you can work at maintaining run fitness through this...

Really, really depressed. Also found a thread at http://runningtimes.com/forum/archive/index.php?t-1817.htmlthat states they've been out months with it.

I'm registered for my first IM - IMFL. I guess a lot depends on how bad the fractures are. I'm having a detailed discussion with ortho on friday. I'm hoping if I do nothing for 6 weeks, start swimming and riding after that and work into IM training in June I'll be ok.

Fixed that for you....

Seriously, if you're able to swim during this initial 6-week period, I am assuming deep-water aquajogging is okay too. (Just check with your ortho or PT to be sure.) Do it if you're able.

I hope you heal up quickly. And, stop reading stuff online, because it'll only stress you out more and only a small portion of it will hold true for you.

Definitely discuss with the doc ........ but if you take the next two months off completely to heal up that still gives you almost 7 months to ramp it back up for Florida.

I would seriously recommend healing up well and right.  No one wants a recurring injury and honestly, nothing is worth injuring yourself for a long period, even an IM!!

I have no idea what caused it. Always used the same shoes and always from a very reputable running store in Austin. Get new shoes on a regular basis. I do run on concrete all the time.

I did ramp up volume quite a bit last year but I never broke the 10% rule. It was my 2nd year of tris and I went from sprints my first year to HIM's last year and I'm STILL planning on IMFL this year!

See the recent Runner's World issue...I just read the article last night about Paula Radcliffe...isn't this that she suffered from right after having a baby?  It was a good article....
