Well,
it started out an excellent day,
the sun shineing,
a slight ocean breeze,
had a good ride about 60k.
Stopped at the lbs around 1:30
had a`power bar and took off for another 50-60k
5 km up the road it all turnt bad,
swerved at by a f-wit in a van
clipped my bars
I go over th top and am now luck enough to have a broken arm.
And they took off.
Lucky the car behind stopped and offered 1st aid saw the incident and got the rego.
Great start for my 2 months leave and the start of the season.
Just brought a wettie yesterday too gonna come in heaps handy now!

A bugger of a break to cant put it in a cast and gonna need extensive physio and need to see a orthopedic surgeon!

and man its difficult to type with my left hand!

Damn! Glad to see that you aren't dead, just slightly damaged. I hope the authorities are able to track that psycho down and make their life as miserable as what they've done to you. Take care of yourself.

That's awfull!!!!!!!! I am so sorry to hear that.  Did the other person who helped you get enough information to find the A$$**le driver who hit you?? I hope so and I hope they are dealt with.

Wishing you a speedy recovery...hang in there.  Keep us updated on your progress

Boy, that's a tough break - I'm sorry to hear about the injury, but am glad it wasn't any worse.  I got clipped this summer by a horse trailer (unintentionally) and escaped with nothing more than torn bar tape! (How's that for luck)?  But it's one of the scariest things that can happen.

Keep us posted on your recovery, all the best for speedy healing.  And hopefully you can keep the legs and cardio in shape during the upper body rehab so you're not starting ground zero...Again, thoughts are with you...

Man, such luck. Sorry to hear about the misfortune, hope you can bounce back OK. Too bad you weren't living here in "Lawsuit Crazy" America...you'd have a fine case against the guy and a good lawyer could probably get you enough to buy all the latest tri-gear and live sorta comfortably for a while, at least putting some money away for a rainy day!

Get well soon Ian...keep the faith and don't give up!

Ian,

That really suck!!! I'm glad you are okay and not injured in a more serious way.

I hope they are able to find out and prosecute those who did this to you.

Big bummer that it is in the begining of your 2 month leave.

Feel better!
Kathy

Glad you're reasonably ok.  My uncle got hit 3 weeks ago, broke his leg/hip, sprained his shoulder, and countless road rash.  Had to have emergency surgery to fix the hip, and still don't know if he'll ride again.  Same thing, hit and run, but he was by himself and there wasn't any other traffic, so no luck finding the guy.  His only description was an old blue Astrovan. We've coined it the "evil blue van".  We're still looking for it.

Good luck in your recovery!!  Make sure you listen to your physical therapist!!  We're good people (most days!!)

I'm so sorry to hear about your accident. Getting swiped by a car is my biggest fear; I hope the police catch who hit you. A$$hole, indeed.

Get well soon!

This happens more often than we really realize. I hear this unfortunate story at least every other month from a cyclist I know in my area. Some get by unscathed and some sustain injuries such as you did.

It's a crying shame, but everyone needs to feel important and unfortunately for us on bikes, some people gain this human need to feel important by putting others' lives in danger.

Keep you chin up!

I have to say, this is one of my MAJOR fears about biking in South Florida. The drivers are absolutely mindless and crazy. Especially the elderly population. I have not been hit yet, but I really fear this happening. My mom reminds me all the time to be careful. I think she would love it if I decided to give up biking alltogether. I wish there was a safe place to bike where cars don't go 50 mph around you...

Good luck, please rest up and feel better. I'll be thinking of you.

Hey Ian hope your recovery goes well. That shouldn't happen to anybody, unfortunately we hear of it more than we would like. My buddies and I almost got taken out by this crazy old bat coming out of the Cracker Barrell last month, all we got for an appolgy was the finger from her sausage fingered passenger.
Keep Well.

Ian, hope you recover soon! I am just a novice rider. I go to trails and greenways where cars aren't allowed. I need to start distance work so I need to go out on the roads...hearing about your accident just concerns me more....

A$$holes indeed!

Thanx for your thoughts guys & gals,

The driver was actually an l plater with their mother as the instructor,
I'm not suprised thou some of the neighbourhoods around here just breed loser type families like that!
Kind of like the families you see off the jerry Springer show
Good lesson that one was!

They're definatly gonna go the row to as I have quite a few mates in the police down here and they're lookin after me
Also the LBS is writing my bike off for the insurance so I'll end up with a newie, they're not gonna risk it as it is carbon/alloy so thats a good 4grand.
Just gotto hurry up and heal.
But dont worry guys I wont risk damaging myself again by rushing the healing process.
Many thanx

I'm late to the post today - I am so sorry about your misfortune, but thank goodness it wasn't worse! Don't disappear while you are getting healthy, keep us posted on your progress with PT! We don't see many kookaburras here in Massachusetts, so stick around, ok?

Best of luck with your recovery!

It's a "bummer" about the accident, but I am glad that it was nothing major.  And when you say: "Lucky the car behind stopped and offered 1st aid saw the incident and got the rego. "  Call me dumbo, but what does "rego" mean?

You know, cyclists have to beware of assholes in motor vehicles,  jackasses on skateboards, nitwits on rollerblades, brain-dead pedestrians, demented squirrels, and ... other ... stupid cyclists!   One has to be ever on one's guard in this sport!
