Subject: to supplement or not to supplement
With my level of physical activity rising along with my age. I was wondering what some of your opinions are on taking supplements and vitamins and such. I currently do not take any, and on occasions have wondered with the additional activity I have added over the last year if this is something I should look into?

Warning: another can of worms opening

1. Sensible diet, including good carbs and plenty of protein

2. Daily multivitamin (cause we all screw up #1)

3. and the only other clinically-proven supplement for endurance athletes: DHMO.

Quality, quantity and timing of #1 being most important.

All the rest is psuedo science.

I believe in taking supllements to reduce inflammation and free radicals produced from training and racing. I take a combination of these supplements

1. Omega 3 (fish Oil)
2. Multi vitamin
3. Magnesium
4. Co Enzyme Q10

All of these supplement have anti-inflammatory effects and co enzyme Q10 and the multivitamin have antioxidants. As the volume of training ramps up I will take more Omega 3 to help with recovery. These supplements are in addition to post training nutrition such as recoverite and perpetum during training.

As far as supplememtns go I take:

1. Protein
2. Multi vitamin
3. B-12
4. Glucosamine
5. Amino Acids

But then again I am not strictly an endurance athlete.

Some may be psychological, but since I started taking them about a year ago I feel better!

Glucosamine
Fish Oil
Vitamin C (my grandpa said I would never get sick if I took one a day. So far he is right)
Aspirin

Post workout protein, usually whey and within 30 mins workout/exercise

Multi-Vitamin with breakfast

Everything else I do nutrition wise is managing food/meals.

Just a multivitamin for me

I tried glucosamine, but I didn't notice any difference in the way my body felt after taking it for about a year.  I know some vball players that say it makes their knees feel better though.

I swear by glucosamine.  Used to have pains in my knees and hip flexors.  Since taking glucosamine those pains are gone.  Not sure if it's the glucosamine or more/better training, but I'm not going to stop taking it to find out.  My wife also started taking glucosamine for an ankle problem.  It helped her also.

GLucosamine helps my knees & hips feel better. I also take a daily multivitamin and I have a huge canister of 100mg Vitamin C tablets that I "snack" on throughout the day.

I try to add Flax oil, or flax meal to recipes, or just take flax oil capsules.

I used to take a multivitamin, but I don't think I'm working hard enough to use it any more. And every meal I eat is mostly fruit or vegetable.
I do take a fish oil capsule now.

And I'm a regular DHMO user

Same here ...... more for added measure of security than anything else.

Unless you are really meticulous about what you eat, and stick to all fresh stuff you basically don't get enough of what you need in food anymore.  The crap is so processed and treated that it often lacks nutritional value even though it seems like it should have it in it.  So for me it just makes sense to add in another safety net to cover any holes in my not-so-great diet.

I take a multi - not necessarily every day but attempt....

to aid recovery:

I take antioxidants: tomato based lycopene (also has data on sun protection showed best data when on board at least 12 weeks prior to exposure - with season coming...),
astraxanthin - also has sun protection data, grape seed extract

glutamine

I was going to start taking Glucosamine, gettin close to the big three O, but take Endurox after every bike or run workout, which contains a pretty good amount.

I need to get on a multivitamin for the reasons mentioned above, just always forget.

Oh, and I eat fresh food... avoid entirely foods with High fructose Corn Syrup (check your labels... even your "healthy" bread), I do not eat red meat and limit my dairy to my pizza weakness and I try to eat fish once in a while...

I supplement my diet with a healthy dose of Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer and I do not limit my red wine consumption.

Works for me...
