Subject: Late night training
Does anyone out there train late at night..say 9:00 and later? I usually wait until all of the kids are in bed before I start training. Does not look like I will be able to do any early training except on the week ends. My swims are at the Y which closes at 9:45 and I am always the last one out of the pool. My runs usually start after 10:00. I have just started biking and will be doing that probably the same time as the run. Does anybody ride with lights on their bike? I have ran with a head lamp before just to be seen.
I usually won't get to bed until 12:00 or 12:30 getting about 6-1/2 hrs sleep. Anyone thoughts on mixing the training up doing some AM and some PM workouts. Or is training at the same time of day more beneficial for some reason?

I do almost all of my training at night as well 'cause of the kid thing. I find I'm fine once I get going but some nights it's a struggle to get my butt moving.

I'm not quite as much of a nightowl as you, but I don't usually head out the door until 8:30 or so, so, for long runs, that often means coming home after 10.

It probably wouldn't hurt to train a few days in the morning and get a couple extra hours of sleep, if you can.

Most of my training is after the kids are in bed. Almost skipped last night because I broke my cardinal rule - DON'T LAY DOWN!!! It is so hard to get back up after a long day.

Somehow I managed to motivate myself and started my run at 10:30, after cooldown, logging, hydration, shower, it was 12:30 by the time I went to bed.

Tonight I managed to sneak into the gym after work and got in a rare early evening workout.

As for riding at night, I've only done it a couple of times when I was pressed for time last season - got my new bike 5 days before a scheduled tri and had no other time to get used to it before the race. I made sure I rode in the safest place possible near my house, but was still spooked about getting hit by a car and/or finding a road hazard in the dark the hard way. I try to do my outdoor rides on weekends for the most part.

during the summer I'll do quite a bit of later night training just to escape the heat though. Some nights I don't get home until there is an hour or so of daylight left so  I might ride the bike some while it's light, then on the trainer. I've often taken a nap and get up around 10 or even 11pm and go out running

I do all my swims after 6pm.. and sometimes will ride the trainer when I get home till midnight or so.

The only thing I see that could be a problem is lack of sleep. I think being as active as we are most of us need at least 7-8hrs. More during heavy training...

just my 2 cents.

Not late late, but I've had several nights on the trainer after 9PM, my problem is that I also get up early and have trouble falling asleep after a late workout. Some of that is that I end up rushing around after inorder to get to bed quickly and I lay down while still a little 'up' from the workout. I haven't done rides in the dark thought, only runs and trainer rides at night.

  • .. and have trouble falling asleep after a late workout.

  • x2

The later workouts can take a toll over time. Pushes my internal clock back an hour or more until I can finally fall asleep. Problem is, I still have to get up at the same time in the morning.

Most of my training has me done around 7:30 or 8.  Not as late as you, though.  I would say get it in when you can, if you are comfortable with it.

For me, I know if I'm working out much after 8, I can't get to sleep well, or sleep restlessly.  It makes work the next day a little rough.  But if that's not an issue for ya, go for it!

wgraves7582 - 2008-03-14 9:34 AM I do a lot of dark riding - you definitely want to get a good setup for the helmet (nice bright headlamp) because it follows your eyes. I have a rear blinker and an alright front mount but would like to invest $200 or so to get a better bike lamp, but that is in the future. I know most of the area I ride in so I don't worry about much - just being seen is the most important part of the trip. When I trail ride or run in the dark I go a little slower just to make sure because the depth perception is off once the sun is gone! Enjoy it - it is a great time of solitude and a lot of good conversing can happen between yourself and the training gods!

Reminds me of when I went running once....

I did a lot of running in Colorado, and one of the big concerns was snakes laying on the paths at night to stay warm after the sun heated them up all day (in fact, I almost stepped on a couple every season).  This one path had a lot of cracks that were repaired using black asphalt.  So each crack was a 2" wide black stripe.  EVERY one looked like it could be a snake lying the path at night.  I was panicked the whole run and hi-stepping over every crack.  I bet it would have looked completely comical if you saw me in the light.....

I'm an early morning trainer, and I worry that my lack of workouts in the heat of day will hurt me come race time.  Other posters worry that late workouts will leave their bodies unprepared for early race times.  Now that daylight savings time has started, I look forward to getting a little of both.

I use to do night training. I would get off of work at midnight and then go to Lifetime Fitness to swim. I had no problems with it since I didn't have to be at work until 4 the next afternoon. What I didn't like was the nudity. Young college girls running around topless during the summer. It didn't happen every night but the girls would be topless with their boyfriends in the hot tub. How can I be expected to workout when my eyes are glued to the hot tub. I had to make a decision. Stare at the topless girls or train. I chose to train so I quit and went to a different gym.

More than 50% of my training is at night.  My wife goes to bed pretty early and my kids do to.  I definatley can't train after work because I want to have dinner with the family.  Then I help get the kids in bed and kitchen cleaned up and get ready for the next day.  I am able to spend some time with my wife during this time too.

By about 9:15-9:45, my wife is heading to bed and I am heading out for a run or ride.  I added swiming recently and do that in the morning at about 6-6:30am.

I try to be done with the night training by 10:45 at the latest because I still need to cool down.  If I get to bed any later than 11:30, I will be tired for the next day for sure.
