I was just watching some IM swim starts on you tube and the Ky swim came up. This swim start looked so nice and calm unlike most that I've seen, is there such a thing as a calm swim start, is this rare creature fact or mith? If so this event could be great for a first full IM. Did anyone here do this in 07?

Because of unanticipated weather and river currents (and I think there was some issue with the dam upstream, too?), last year they made the decision a few days out to do a time trial start...

Don't get me wrong...up until that point they had planned for a mass start.

The material I've read to date for '08 says they're doing time trial again...however my thought is that's probably misinfo and it could very well be a mass start in the end.

Do you not like this? Wouldn't this be better than the UFC style start?

The mass start is part of the "tradition" of an Ironman.  The only thing that has changed over the years is that they now have the pros start 10 minutes in front of the AGers (because too many of the fast AG men were plowing over the pro women and screwing up their races).

Jeepfleeb did the race last year along with others.  I'd suggest checking out their race reports.

When I finally do an IM I really hope it is a mass start, even if it is a small race like Redman.  I just think that is part of an IM is the kicking and hitting.

Well it would be hard to know how far behind or ahead you are of some in your age group for one thing. also Just from the pool swims I've done with how people seed themselves might make it harder to draft then the usual go our hard then catch a pair of feet
