I am a runner convert and I am trying to work out a plan with my cycling training and need some input from those who are vet cyclists. Generally when I trained for marathons, I did the standard training program which included all the easy, tempo, MP, LSD, and Interval workouts. All my workouts were generally measured in HRT as my form of guidance in my training. So my easy runs were generally 60-75% HRT, Long Runs at 72%-80%, MP 75%-85%, etc.

If I'm cycling, to get the same sports performance, what are the ranges for the HRT? When I try to cycle, I am doing about 55-60% HRT and I feel gassed already (on Stationery Gym Bike). What are the ranges for LT workouts, easy workouts, etc? Thanks!

Just a point -- most people find that their zones are lower for the bike vs the run. It sounds like your perceived exertion shows that you match that rule as well. So you probably need to adjust the numbers.

I had my zones worked out after a blood lactate test. It will vary significanlty from person to person I suspect, but my HR zones for the bike were on average 10-15% lower than the same zones (1 thru 5) on the run. When I asked my coach about it he explained that there's a difference because running is comparatively high impact.

As far as feeling gassed on the bike, does you're stationary bike display watts? If so, watts may be a better way to gauge the work your doing than HR. Your baseline heart rate is varible depending on so many factors. Watts are watts. I've noticed at if I bike at night at the same wattage I use in the morning, my heart rate is up to 20 BPM higher.

Just as statede, Biking trng HR is almost always lower than running trhng HR (in the same zone) for the exact reason Ranger Bill states. I mean, you are sitting down almost all the time when your biking right?

My results are usually 10 bpm lower for bike HR zones compared to running HR zones.

thanks for the responses. I can see where the bpm should be about 10-15 bpm lower usually. So for me at 110-115 bpm would be on the low end of my workouts nonetheless until my legs and body start acclimating to cycling conditions! thanks everyone!
