Run
Comments: Saw Tim (konichiwa) at the start and mentioned I didn't really feel ready to go. I think the whole bike thing had thrown me mentally. But once the run started, I was able to settle in fairly quickly. Just tried to keep running steady and slowly picked off a few people in front of me along the way. Grabbed a quick drink of water in the last mile (slowed a bit there to get some down) and tried to keep chugging up the hill there. What would you do differently?: Not much. This was right about the pace I was looking to start at. Transition 1
Comments: Went down the wrong aisle, but fortunately was enough room to just duck under a rack (rather than running back around). Switched shoes and then got my helmet on (little slow buckling it with gloves on my hands). What would you do differently?: Down the right aisle. Learn to do the shoes on pedals for these short races. Bike
Comments: Got off to a bit of a slow start as I tightened my shoes and then worried a bit about the missing gear. But once I settled down, I was able to mostly focus on my effort (except when I shifted into the non-existant gear a couple times). Passed quite a few people on the ride. Was once re-passed by one of them, but then passed him for good as well (at least until the run). The course was challenging with some decent hills and some tight turns which required scrubbing some of the speed you could get on the downhills. Did pass one guy who obviously went down hard--had blood all over his shoulder and bike. Ouch! What would you do differently?: I felt good about the ride, but feel like maybe I still could have pushed a little harder throughout. But since I slowed the second run as is, that might be overly optimistic on my part. Transition 2
Comments: Shoes off/on. Helmet off. Get going. What would you do differently?: Should have taken my feet out of the shoes on the bike. Run
Comments: A little harder to get going than I expected, but then ran solid in the middle portion. In the last mile, I was working hard but feel like I just couldn't muster up the mental fortitude to push through the pain and really extend myself. I had been passed by several people along the run, but nobody over the final portion. Maybe having somebody there would have been enough to do it. What would you do differently?: Push into that 'discomfort zone' more over the final mile. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and chatted with Tim (konichiwa) while getting some food, free Yankz and checking out some of the awards. What limited your ability to perform faster: Overall, I was pretty happy with this race--at least at this point of the season. As mentioned, I do need to work on embracing the pain more in these short races. It should be helpful for the end of the longer races as well. Event comments: Liked the course better this year than when the race was in DE. Very challenging for relatively short distances. Well organized. Last updated: 2008-03-12 12:00 AM

Had a Clif Bar, banana, OJ and coffee for breakfast @5am or so and then drove to the race.
Took the bike for a quick spin just to make sure everything was in working order. Everything was, except for the fact that I had left a cog off the cassette when reassembling it last night--idiot. Still seemed to shift (mostly) OK--just spun out when I shifted into the non-existing gear.
After deciding there was nothing I could do about it now, went out for a short jog and did a few sets of strides before lining up for the race.
