Guys,

I know this topic has been brought up before, but i could not find what i was looking for when searched through the threads.  I'm not a very balanced biker, I need to find a set of pedals that are easy to disengage and require no look down to clip in. Do they exist? Thanks!

I have Speedplays, you don't have to look down, you can clip in on either side of the pedal, they are pretty easy.  To get out you just twist you ankle out, although I don't think getting out of them is any easier than any other pedal.

Z, you should check out those Look Keo "Easy" that I showed you in the magazine!

I think it just comes with finding a pair that you get comfortable with. I've only ever tried Looks (on my bike) and the crappy old Shimanos (on the spin bikes at the gym). I'm fairly comfortable with my Looks, though sometimes I do still have to look down, or try it a few times, to get the one foot in. Getting out is very easy, though. Shimanos seem harder to get into, to me. And there are others that I have never tried, though I've heard Speedplays are very easy to get into. But I think it all depends on what works for you.

I just got my first pair of speedplays and they certainly are easy to get into.

I think they make the "Light Action" series for easier entry and release.  You might want to check them out.

Ditto on the Speedplays. No looking at all. I've got them set at the lowest tension setting and have no trouble either with clipping in first try or with them holding securely.

you can check out some of the mountain bike pedals or the spd pedals that are simmilar to regular platform pedals that toe clips are used with. This type of pedal allows you to clip onto one side or rest your foot on the other side if your not comfortable with clipping in yet. They are also very easy to clip in and out of.

something like this

Another vote for speedplay.  I use Light action.  I was really scared when i first tried (I have horrible balance!) but these are super easy in and out.

I have old-style Look pedals, one-sided entry, and I never look down to clip in. After a few thousand miles, almost any style of pedal is going to become second nature.

I agree with the above.  Getting used to them is the biggest key to not need to look down.  I have some older looks as well that kind of flip over.  I know how hit them with my toe just enough to get them rigt side up and clip in.

However, the double sided entry (SPD type or speedplay, may help initially).

Good question and welcome to the world of clipless!

Speedplays. Easy as can be. No flipping them around, etc. My boyfriend switched to these because his first set were too hard to clip into... now, no problems at all.

Crank Brothers Quattros are as easy to clip into as Speedplays and much easier to clip out of IMO and are double sided as well. As a relative newbie, I had Speedplays but switched to Quattros. I find them more beginner-friendly, but as others have posted, with time and practice, any pedal will become second nature.

I also found Speedplays harder to walk in and had to always clean debris out of the cleats. On the upside, Speedplays do have a good resale value on ebay if they don't work out for you (luckily).

I ended up with Look Keos after a while at the bike shop. Had Shimanos on road and mtn - still have them on my mountain bike & won't change those.

Selected the Keos because between the Quattros & Speedplays & Keos, the Keos were the best deal on that day and also were the most highly rated by the LBS guys. The others were a close second. Shimanos now would be a distant 4th. Haven't been disappointed.

Ask your LBS (Local Bike Shop) to make sure they are set properly. My former LBS had my Looks set so tight that my ankles literally ached after rides. My current LBS adjusted the tension properly and it is not very hard to clip out.

I agree with eberulf. My bike is new (2 wks new) and so are my shoes and pedals. I have the Shimano M505 stock SPD pedal that came on my bike. Initially the tension was so tight, that I too thought I might twist my foot right off of my ankle! Released the tension and viola! I practiced in my yard, fell over once, haven't looked back since! I was even chased by a Rot tonight and got my foot out in time to stop. As a newbie, I am doing fine with my stock spd's. Good luck to you in what you decide to get!!

May I suggest if your balance is so poor you feel you cant look down for 10 sec. Put platform pedals on, and ride your bike that way until your bike skills improve then go clipless.

I hate my speedplays and I'm switching them out. I can't get the cleat screws to stay in place. You also cannot walk across snow in them because it cakes in and instantly turns to solid ice (regional problem I know).

another vote for look keo's here.  Their oblong shape means they always go back to the same position as soon as you clip out, making it easy to clip back in.  I
