We are in the market for another vehicle. Our Chev Venture van is an insurance write off so we need a replacement.

Not necessarily looking for a mini van again. Looking more for an economically (if it exisits) SUV type car. Doesn't have to be 4x4, in fact I don't really need it at all.

We sometimes haul a fair amount of photography equipment, etc. around so we need something with a reasonable size cargo space but again with emphasis on economy.

I made this a poll for easy/quick suggestions but extra comments welcome.

One more thing. We prefer to consider something used...in around 3 to 5 years.

oops - wrong question.

How about a used Volvo wagon?  not sure on the gas mileage.

I'm not a good person to ask as we are doing are part to keep the gas companies in business with our gas guzzling SUV...

I am surprised how much I enjoy driving my Honda Odyssey van! The van gets excellent mileage, is very comfortable, and obviously hauls a lot of gear when needed.

try the Jeep Compass or Patriot. I just got a Patriot and love it. Super cheap on gas, tonnes of room and has some good get up and go for a 2.8Ltr. Good luck with the search.

Can't go wrong with a Honda CRV, any year is good.

Love my RAV4, excellent vehicle for a triathlete. I can put the "40" part of the 60/40 rear seat down , and fit my bike in without removing the front wheel. Two bikes fit well with the full seat down and wheels removed, still plenty of room for gear. I get 26-28MPG in mixed driving with my heavy foot. By comparison, my wife's Odyssey van gets 18.

I looked at the CRV because we had been Honda owners for a couple decades, but the RAV4 had more interior room and more functional space (lots more in the cargo area).

The choice of a vehicle depends on your budget and what you need it for.  Do you have children?  Pets?  Do you do a lot of travelling?  Camping?  Out of town tris?  I've had a Matrix for the last 5 years and love it.  But now we are looking to buy a new car and have decided to get a Subaru Impreza.  It is reliable, has all the cargo space I need and falls within my budget.

Kinda depends how many people you need to seat.  If you only have 4-5, then a Rav4 or a Subaru would work well.  If you need 6+, you are probably better off with another minivan.

Anyone have any experience or know anything about the Dodge Caliber? I believe they just came out in 07. It's a "crossover" but seems to have a fair bit of storage room, and with a 4cyl 2.2ltr it should be quite economical.

I'm driving a Honda Civic Hybrid myself these days, gets a respectable 41MPG combined.  However, if I put a bike rack and bike or 2 on the back I'm lucky to get 30MPG.  Not that 30 is that terrible, it's just a let down when you're used to over 40.

Anyway, just a note that the smaller hybrids aren't necessarily the best choice if you need cargo room.

My neighbors had one.  I wouldn't call it a crossover as much as a hatchback.  It was pretty much the same size as my Toyota Corolla.  If you laid the back seats down, you'd have room for 2-4 bikes laying down, but then you'd only have room for 2 people in the car.

The dodge jouney is the new fancy schmancy crossover that seats 6 and has cool cargo options.
