New user 27 Milwaukee, WI (east side) | Subject: RE: Door County Triathlon Half Ironman I did some biking up there last fall with a couple of friends along the Bay Side (hwy B, maybe?) and we saw some of the Triathlon markings on the road, and the road was AWESOME! Very smooth, few cracks, light traffic, awesome view! I'm hoping there's a good turnout for this race. I think there are a few big climbs up into the bluffs as well...not going to be fun going up those! |

Master 1588 San Francisco | Subject: RE: Door County Triathlon Half Ironman I'm considering doing this one. My wife's parents live in Sturgeon Bay so it'd be a chance to visit them and also go preview the IM WI bike course sometime afterward. My tri bike is less than a year old so i guess I can still call it new Edited by enginerd 2008-04-16 12:09 AM |

Member 5 Sturgeon Bay, WI | Subject: RE: Door County Triathlon Half Ironman The roads are great (and right out my front door!), and there should be two good climbs on the bike, one of which you will then cover on the run. I have life guarded this race before, and it is well run and a great course. |

New user 3 Whitewater, WI | Subject: RE: Door County Triathlon Half Ironman Dont worry too much about the bluffs, most people end up walking up them to conserve energy anyways. It doesnt pay to blow your legs off on a 300ft climb when you are running 13 miles. Oh yea, and Im getting a Trek Equinox 9.9, and removing the Dura-Ace and putting Red on. Ill be ready to fly by IMWI09! |

Master 1588 San Francisco | Subject: RE: Door County Triathlon Half Ironman If you go the the registration page on Active.com, it says this:
When I e-mailed the RD about being on the wait list, how long the list was, what my chances, were, etc. this is what he replied:
So, it's rather odd to call it a "wait list" if you are guaranteed to race, but whatever. |

3 | Subject: RE: Door County Triathlon Half Ironman Hi, everyone...TRIBob from NJ here. I have done the Door County TRI the last two years, so I'll give you everything I know. First off, it is extremely well run. Sean Ryan (who also does the Green Bay Marathon) overlooks NO detail. The venue is perfect for a race...OK, now the course: Swim - Can be cold, as it was the last two years (in fact, two years ago, the oly was shortened to a sprint swim as they had not advertised that wet suits would be mandatory below a certain temp). The water in Green Bay can be choppy...it is very clear (you can see bottom at 20 feet down) and easily to navigate. Bike- This year the bike route will include all of last year's plus the aded distance. No new hills were added in the additional portion, which goes through downtown Sturgeon Bay. A monster hill (remember, I am from FLAT NJ) is located on the return bike route, I am guessing this year around mile45-50. It climbs significantly and you are out in an area where you may not see a single other person, depending on how spread out the riders get by then. Overall, the bike is quite fast, as it is mostly flat with some false flats...beautiful views of the bay in the first 10 miles. Run - Same as last year with one long added out and back up the peninsula to the Shipwreck Brewery in gg Harbor (great micro-brewery for post race brew!)...back down the peninsula, then up the bluff for a loop through the Horseshoe Bay golf area...this stretch can be very hot as there is no shade. There is a significant downhill (which can be a bit painful at this point) just before the finish. Post-Race - Great food and bevages. An actual pig roast with corn on the cob, bagels, fruit, sodas and beer. Race times are available immediately in a print out. The 1/2 Iron has approx. 450 individual and team participants. Next year, the race days will be split...sprint on Sat and 1/2 Iron on Sunday with maximum field of 1000 each day. No doubt this year's success will allow them to fill up next year. This is an excellent tune up for IMW. One final note...I will be performing the National Anthem at this race, so be sure to say hello if you are there. I'm not a small guy (racing Clydesdale) and am not hard to miss. My goal time is a sub-six hours, holefully closer to 5:40.
See ya there! |

I know the "transfer" date is up, but we can figure something out. Thanks a lot! Looking forward to it |

I live in Green Bay and they have been predicting rain over and over day after day and we have had very little so I think they are over predicting because of a front that is sitting over the area. I am so excited and ready to go. We should meet up as one big group like before the swim or something. |

Extreme Veteran 633 | Subject: RE: Door County Triathlon Half Ironman Sooooo, what did everybody think of the bluffs? That was the toughest hill I've ever climbed, no joke! And talk about a headwind on the bike! Awesome race though, I'd do it again in a heart beat, I'm totally signing up for next year! |

Eh, I didn't find the hills to be that bad, but then again, I live in San Francisco. Great race. Sean Ryan the RD does a great job. I'd certainly consider doing it again myself, although he's opening up to 1000 registrants next year instead of the 407 (half iron) who participated this year. |

New user 27 Milwaukee, WI (east side) | Subject: RE: Door County Triathlon Half Ironman I agree - the event was very well organized. Plenty of volunteers, aid stations, food, drink, support, etc. All around a fun event. Swim was great for sighting with over 40 bouys along the course and was pleasantly surprised to find wet-suit peelers!! First time i've experiences that and I have to admit, it was quite fun. First portion of the bike course was amazing, a couple of choppy roads towards the middle and a slight headwind (that I couldn't really tell which direction it was coming from because I felt it a couple different ways), and then a tough run course. First portion of the run was quite steamy, and the 2nd portion was quite hilly, but it turned out alright. I'm not sure if anyone went to the pre-race course discussion on Saturday, but wow, they did a really good job with that as well...powerpoint presentation, course views, arrows, descriptions, etc. I was impressed. And the rain held off making it an excellent day. I really liked Racine last year, but the whole "professional" aspect of that race (being overwhelmed by the # and ability of the people there), and incredibly flat bike terrain make DC more of a fun event |
