Subject: 23c tire pressure in the south Florida sun?

Ok, I'm learning as I go, and Sunday's lesson was pumping up my new 23c tires (coming from 25c) indoors and riding outdoors on a spring morning in south Florida.  I got a front flat, and just as I was about to screw in the CO2 and inflate the new tube, my rear tire blew.  I assumed that the first flat was due to the debris quota Clearwater and Dunedin try hard to maintain, but after the back tire went I knew it was because I had pumped up my tires indoors at 75 degrees, then ended up in 83 degree direct sun on black asphalt (effective temp = ??).

So, my question is, how should I inflate when the temp is going to rise by 10 or more degrees by the time I'm done?

Glen

NICE!  I just read this and it could be what happened to me in my last race.  I always run on 120 psi, but it was cold when I inflated them (65), and the temp went up to about 80-85.  I had a blow out.  May take that into account the next time.....

Living in FL I've been doing this, my rides start out at 100 psi.  Nice to know there's a formula, just another thing to get all anal over on race day morning, lol!

Or just inflate your tires to a reasonable pressure to begin with.

I'd probably roll a tire going in a straight line.

By the formula, it looks like 100 psi is my starting pressure for April.  Can't wait to see what's the formula says for summertime 95 degrees!

I thought I had, but I'm new to the 23c tires and the delta-temp has been changing over the past month.  Two variables for a newtriguy such as myself to deal with.

Guess what?  Another flat after 3.5 miles.

I compared this tube to the last several that were on the front rim in the past, and the holes of unknown cause were in the same exact spot.  I looked at the rim, and it looks like it was screwed up by my old LBS when they trued it.  Their usual way of dealing with issuse like this is to tap dance until the person just leaves (which actually is why I left), so there's no sense in going back to discuss it with them.  The situation sucks since each ride has cost me ~$9, but I might be able to fix it now that I know what was screwed up.

I had this trouble riding Mulholland the weekend before last. 90+ air temps in Calabasas. My tired swell and caught the rear brake, when I stopped to see what was up it totally popped like a balloon. I started at my usual 120psi. I'll take note of this problem at Wildflower... beauty of BT, you learn something new everyday.

I've learnt a few years ago not to leave my bike in the car with the tyres fully inflated.

always let a bit of air out when you knwo your bike is going to be inside your car for a period of time over summer here.   sucks to come back to your car pull the bike out for a ride only to find two flat tyres!
