Hey Guys,

Any good spots to get in some practice OWS's? I live out in Frederick, MD and as I prep for my first (and second) tri I'd like to get a few practice swims in later this Spring and Summer. Thanks in advance for your help!

The two places I've done OWS in Maryland are Sandy Point State Park and Gunpowder Falls State Park. Gunpowder had seaweed like you wouldn't believe, so I don't recommend it, and Sandy Point is pretty far from Frederick (but is good for swimming). I've also heard that there is swimming at Cunningham Falls State Park, you might want to check that out.

Thanks for the input and recommendations. Anyone ever try Greenbrier State Park? I haven't been there in years but remember it being a nice lake although I'm not sure how large the swim area is.

I was there in 2006- I don't know if you can swim beyond the roped-off part, and in the summer, it's full of families and kids, so getting in quality swimming might be difficult. Though, the lifeguards go off duty around like 5 or 6 or so, so you could always swim on the "forbidden" side after that

Thanks for the response. That's how I remembered it too but it's been years since I was last there. Not a bad idea about waiting for after hours but I'm pretty sure there is a fair bit of boating on that lake.

Any other thoughts?

Only been there twice; don't remember seeing boats, but that doesn't mean that there aren't any. It's a pretty small lake, though - you can see the other side.

If your tris are lake swims, I would recommend Cunningham Falls. They have a swimming area that is roped off. When I was practicing the area was 25 meters wide so I just practiced going back and forth sighting the buoy on the other side.

Thanks for the heads up...and 25 meters in OW would be fine starting point. When it warms up I'll try to head up there.

Hey Chris!  We're both in David's mentor group.  Funny, I was going to pose this same question.  I had an aweful swim down at Smith Mountain Lake and NEED to get in some OWS time.  My wife and I are doing the Cascade Lake Sprint on 6/1 in Hampstead.  I don't think that's too far from Frederick as the crow flies anyway.  It's really small so the 500m distance is almost a perimeter swim of the lake.  I was thinking of trying that a couple times.  I'd be interested to hear more about Cunningham Falls.  If you are planning on doing a swim there maybe the three (or more of us) could meet up.

Sandy Point had a few swimmers out this weekend. I used a full suit, and although it was a little cold, it wasn't uncomfortable. Think I'll be out again next weekend for a little.

How was the chop there?  Any idea what the water temperature actually was?

How do you structure your workout when you're out there?  Shore and back a few times or a loop like a race?

Beginning this Sunday (Mother's Day), Mid Maryland Triathlon Club (MMTC) will be organizing an open water swim at Sandy Point State Park each Sunday through May and June, and possibly July (until the jellyfish come out).  The swim begins at 8:00 am and we meet on the patio in front of the bathrooms.  We swim parallel to shore, on an approximately 500 yd course.  You choose the depth and how many laps you want to swim.  The swims are free, but there is a small entrance fee for the park, so bring cash.  Through at least May, a wetsuit is recommended, but not mandatory.  You can check water temps here:  http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/plot_met.php?station=tplm2&meas=wtmp&uom=E.  You don't have to be a member of MMTC to participate in the swims - all are welcome.  Hope you can join us!

there was zero chop this last weekend. But, having swam there quite a few times last year, there can be a chopif a storm is coming in. The current was going out pretty strongly while I was there. I chased down a kid's ball that was headed out, and I'm not ashamed to say it was hard to keep up with that ball, the current was sneaky strong.

When I swim there, I swim parallel to shore. From the tree that starts the fishing zone to the last sign by the jetty is .33 miles. A group from the Annapolsi Tri Club meets informally all summer long one evening a week. I'm sure ther temp was the same as Thomas Point which is just off shore.

The jelly fish do appear about the 4th of July, but between the wetsuit and the Sea safe, it's still bearable.

Has anyone done this? I'm planning to go this Sunday.
