Yeah, I grew up in Annapolis (through Jr. High and High school and later while commuting to college after getting out of the miltary).  I know the town well and have driven through the worst messes the town can produce.

I knew last year after having the run course change about 4 times, including within two days before the event, that the uppity a-holes who live downtown would be an issue.  but I did not think the communities farther away, especially on college Parkway would have problems.

Oh well, have to just keep trainng and wait and see.

I'm curious if they are even going to be able to reroute from Sandy Point.  It looks they don't have many other options... maybe St. Margarets Rd into Annapolis?  We'll see.

I think folks that attend churches on College Parkway have trouble with "traffic" even when there isn't a special event.  I can see them being very annoyed with a race.  I know one them has a police officer there on Sundays to help people get out (and that's on days with normal traffic flow!)

If this is going through the Chamber of Commerce I would recommend all the race participants that are staying at local hotels (and even those who aren't) call the hotels and make them very aware of the revenue that stands to be lost if the race is cancelled.  2000 racers and their families staying for a weekend in town will have a great impact on their economy.  There are several hotels listed on the race website as supporting hotels that stand to loose a great deal of money. Think about it, this is the weekend AFTER Labor Day and therefore basically a bonus weekend with a lot of cash on the line.

True story fgray. I'm not even racing, but I've been following the news and I can't believe the community resistance. I hope the race organizers can pull a rabbit out of their hats! From what I heard, yesterday's meeting did not go so well at all for "us" (second hand info).

Speaking of money, if the race doesn't go off, how do you like this policy.

REFUND POLICY: A partial cash (via check) refund less $40, will be made, Only if requested in writing/email on or before July 1, 2008. Please allow up to 4 weeks for processing. After this date, absolutely NO refunds will be made for any reason.

I believe I will have a problem with that.

I think what they are going to do is to offer a swim/run race for a lesser fee. For those that choose to do it, the remainder can either be refunded or go to one of the sponsor charities. For those who don't want to do a swim/run (like me), my understanding is that there will be a refund. I don't know if it is 100% or not, as there might be some outlays already made, and in my opinion that would be understandable. It isn't the race organizers' fault, it is the County's fault for changing their minds at the last minute. The $40 admininstrative fee from the website is for people who change their minds, I can't imagine they would offer refunds for a cancelled race minus $40 per the website.
I think Make-A-Wish, Patriot's Oly, and Savageman Oly are about to get a nice surge of applicants. This was my second A race for the year, after Columbia, which was several months ago. I'm just going to roll this application fee into another race.

That's if YOU pull out.  If they cancel the race, I'm not sure how they would handle it.  Usually the bigger races will have some sort of insurance policy for situations like this, but that doesn't mean that it is a guaranteed refund.

We'll have to wait and see.  But they obviously stopped taking new registrants once the permit failed to go through, which means they probably saw the writing on the wall.

Hell, I'd take just transferring my entry fee over to Make-A-Wish if there isn't anything else going on with the family that day.  I've already got a place to stay in Bethany and I would just leave my bike and wetsuit and the rest of my race stuff there for my sprint which is the next weekend at the shore.

I understood the if "you" pull out portion, that's why I highlighted the "No refunds for any reason", section.

This was to be my wife's first Oly so a swim/run race just won't be as good.  The Make-a-Wish sounds good, but the Savage Man half-iron has peaked my interest.  Thanks for the heads up.

We're only back in Maryland for a month visiting in-laws while the wife does a quick sports-med rotation but it looks like there is a ton going on.  I'll be asking for help with some long bike routes since my IM plan will be calling for several century+ rides while up in your neck of the woods.

I'm one of two BTers who did Savageman (half) last year. There wasn't an Oly then, but I can tell you with confidence you won't regret signing up for it. Beautiful venue, one brutal hill to keep even the Oly "savage", and a great event.

Crap. At least the refund is there, time to sign up for Savage Man.  That's one big hill!

Full refunds will be given to those who choose not to participate in the aquathon

Now we can agree... that's a hill!

I think I will send the county and the churches a letter with my own concerns... "Jesus was a triathlete... now he's pissed!"

So where's this letter ....... e-mail or snail mail??

If I want to try and turn the entry around and do Northeast or Make-A-Wish I'll need to do it fast before they fill up.

Savageman is just too much of a trip for me to do as a drive up and race sort of thing.  It is abouta 3-1/2 hour dirve each way.

Ugh.. mine too

I think I'm leaning toward just doing the aquathon though.  I'd have to travel to SavageMan and Make-A-Wish. I already traveled to two tris this season and I'm not digging forking over more money for a hotel.   I don't think North East would be a good idea since it's the weekend before IronGirl.  Grrrr...

IG is a sprint so you would have enough time to recover from an oly. and still do okay there.  And you could easily drive to Northeast the morning of and be fine.

I think they are sending a letter regular mail, but sent an emial to Annapolis Triathlon Club members last night with what they thought the contents of the letter would be, saying they wanted people to respond by 5 pm Friday with their desire, refund or aquathon, to judge interest.
Make-A-Wish isn't too far from the Baltimroe area. I think I will probably just drive down that morning and do it. Maybe a 2 1/2 hour drive from Annapolis with a 7:30 start, not too bad. And totally flat course with an ocean swim. Interesting change in scenery.

The Make-A-Wish is a nice alternative.  Coincidentally enough, this same type of incident happened last year for the Make-A-Wish.  The bike route went over a bridge that the Delaware DOT was working on and wouldn't clear it for the race.  They shorted the bike from 25 miles to ~9 miles.  This year, they've changed the bike route inland, and they sent us an email back in June saying that the bike course was guaranteed this year.  Let's just hope for good weather on the swim (because that was close to being canceled last year too because of the choppy water).

Oh, and free beer for participants.

I wondered why the bike results were so short!  I thought there was some sort of weather issue when I saw that.

My wife might have something planned for that weekend, so I need to figure it out soon one way or another before it gets filled up.

This cancellation just throws a wrench into everything.  I wonder how many other athletes are scrambling to find another race.  I'm trying to plan out Savage Man, if I go it alone I can campout in my car the night before and save the $100+ on a hotel room.  The videos of "The Westernport Wall" are awesome.  The wife might hold of until we get back and she'll do the inagural Amelia Island Oly here in FL.

Would have been nice for her to do Annapolis because her entire family lives there and could be out to support her, maybe they'll have it fixed in 3 years when we get back from Japan.  She's bummed.

Probably about 1200 others. Unfortunately. I doubt many will do the aquathon.

FYI - the savageman Oly does not climb the westernport wall.

There are great campsites along the savage river (on the bike route for the HIM) in my humble opinion. On spring lick road right before you get to Savage reservoir.
