I've never heard of bananas being high in iron, so I had to go try to find some information.

I found: http://www.banana.com

That website, under the nutrition section, says: "On the mineral scale Calcium counts in at 9.2 mg, Magnesium 44.1 mg, with trace amounts of iron and zinc." Where did that information above come from? I'd like to take a look at the full article, or whatever it is.

As for the green or brown spot ripeness, this girl definitley likes to eat banans when they are a little green. Once they get any amount of brown spots, they become pancake fodder.

I'm with you Dolly.  I like my bananas ripe!  Hubby will be ready to toss the last few nanners from the bunch, and I'll tell him, "Nooooo, they're perfect now!"  he thinks I'm nuts.  If I don't eat them in time, I freeze them for my shakes.

From this site, http://www.healthalternatives2000.com/fruitchart.htm,it shows bananas have .4mg of iron. Don't think that's high though.

If your bananas get too ripe to eat, let them continue to ripen until very ripe and mushy. Then you can mush them up and mix them into pancakes or waffles. Super yummy!FYI - riper bananas have a lower glycemic index than less ripe bananas. So, if you want a quick shot of energy, go for less ripe. For steady energy, go for more ripe.

high glycemic high glycemic high glycemic for those of us with weight issues bananas are badddd news. part of a workout/recovery routine theyre great part of your regular diet there are far better sources of carbs that wont give the insulin spike and sweet cravings. I'll stick to apples. Let the flaming begin

As I've said before...everything in moderation. You won't get fat from eating a banana a day. If carefully placed in your diet, like immediately before/after a workout it can be a great part of performance/recovery. I'm all for the benefits of complex, low GI carbs but the media and part of the nutrition industry has scared the general public into thinking hi GI carbs are the devil. How about white rice? I bet millions of people in Japan don't think badly of white rice and they are some of the healthiest people on earth.

I am certain there are many more contributing factors to the health of people in Japan other than they eat rice. Activity level, lack of McDonalds on every corner, access to fresh vegetables all come to mind. And I also feel confident many more people have been "scared" into eating carb counts in the 5-hundreds with near disregard for the need of lean protein and fats than have been coaxed into the new/old low carb "fad".  I read something recently that said interest/participation in low carb diets "peaked" at about 13% and has since dropped to something like 10-11. People concerned about high fat at its peak 50%.  You're right, everything in moderation no matter how you choose to eat 5,000 calories you're still eating 5,000 calories. I was just playing a little devils advocate though in that people, especially those with weight loss in mind, should think before they go out and buy shares of Chiquita and make it their breakfast routine.

My point was simply that things like white rice, which the carb-watchers generally advise against, aren't the problem. It's an entire lifestyle that makes the difference. Activity, portion size, moderation...cutting hi GI carbs from a diet will not make a fat person skinny by itself, and adding something like bananas will not necesarily have a negative impact. I bet I could eat a hot fudge banana split every night of the week without gaining a pound and still stay lean...but only if I pay attention to the rest of my daily diet and exercise plan. Actually, a banana split sounds good...maybe I'll go on the ice cream diet

Mmmm - bananas.

I will eat them in a car
And eat them on the bike
I'll eat them whenever...
It's bananas I like!

Averaging 2 a day, I can't get enough.  I got hooked thinking they prevented cramps...maybe they do...but I slug em down whenever.  Good thread on their nutrition, though...

Am I the only person that wants to puke if I eat bananas before any physical activity?

Bananas + Jen = NO WORKOUT!

I must be weird...everyone else raves about them as a pre-workout food....

For some strange reason I can't eat bananas right out of the peel-- they make me gag. I can have them mixed in with cereal or frozen in a smoothie but not by themselves. And its totally strange becuase I love banana flavors. Hmmmm... guess I'll just keep freezing them and using them in my smoothies

I am an "old school" cyclist so bananas have been a staple for me for many many years.  I would never think of doing a long bike ride witout at least one banana in my back pocket.  Instant energy for that return leg.  Of course, one could argue that gels have all the potassium or ying yang one needs for energy but I love the taste and texture of a banana!

One banana in the morning with breakfast and one in the protein shake after a workout. And I need the tryptophan shot to stay mellow. I like them a little green so I can feel the potassium coating on the inside of my teeth, helps keeps the leg cramps at bay.

Wow! I knew they were a good source of carbs and potassium but I didn't realize bananas were so much more power packed. I've been eating bananas almost everyday simply because they are the cheapest source of energy I can buy--16 bananas/$1.00 in Belize City. They make a good between-meals snack. Now I feel even more assured knowing that I'm getting a whole lot more.

We ALL like 'em a little on the green side here, with 4 women currently living in my house.

Solo brown bananas get tossed into the freezer for later. When we have 3 or more brown ones, fresh or frozen doesn't matter, it's banana bread time! Last week I caught my roommate eyeing the three spotted bananas on the table with that gleam in her eye, just WAITING for me to bake them into banana bread...

Gotta go eat my post-workout banana now!
