so i have been drinking v8 juice every morning now but i wonder if the sodium content is too high or out weighs the benefits of getting the vegetables in the can....  any thoughts?

I've always heard it is very good for preventing cramping because of the sodium and potassium.  Of course I mean take before excercise to build up store not as a mid race drink.

I have always avoided it because it has a lot of sodium in it. I believe they make a reduced-sodium version. Also, other stores, such as Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Wegman's all carry their own low-sodium vegetable juice.

very few foods (I mean FOOD, not stuff that has a whole lot of ingredients you can;t pronounce and additives and preservatives and coloring...) are bad for you- just watch the sodium so you don;t get too much in other places throughout the day.

edited to say, this is my fave brand:

http://www.knudsenjuices.com/products/detail.aspx?groupID=63&categoryID=273&flavorID=498&productID=612

yeah yeah it's pricey, but I water it down a bit...

Not sure how much endurance athletes have to watch their sodium, but they do make a low-sodium variety.

I drink a 12-oz can of the salted stuff nearly every day. I figure the lycopene offsets the sodium.

Cool

The V-Fusion has a relatively low sodium count, something like 3%DV compared to 8%DV of potassium.

I really like the low sodium version - personally I think it tastes better

so, sounds like at a minimum, v8 probably isn't bad for us

LOOOVVVEEE the spicy kind! Also makes a yummy marinade for chicken.

I have a hard time eating right working nights half the time. This helps maintain a little balance and veggie intake.

Did I also mention it's great for my Bloody Marys? Great training drink.

I tried the spicy V8 solo but it was a little strong for me. I still perfer the original.

my husband has replaced his electrolyte sports drinks with a v-8.     he works out in rural NV hiking and sampling all day long, so he needs the Na + K.   As he can only eat in the available restaurants, and they consider french fries a veggie, this ups his veg intake.   The doc told him to cut out coke cola and gaterade due to sugar isses, and only drink water, and the doc ok'ed v-8 as as suppliment to the water.

I NEVER eat enough veggies, so I try to get in a V8 a day.

I figure its worth the tradeoff of no vegetables.

As you can see, I need to work on the dietary aspect of my training

Maybe it's age but I like drinking it for the saltier taste opposed to all the sweeter energy drinks out there and I definitely need the sodium & other good stuff in a V8.

May be a bit too much sodium. I drink my V8 hot, with fresh ground pepper and hot sauce. Basically like a soup. Ha ha.

My two "daily" drinks are V8 Fusion and a cup of green tea.

I chose the V8 Fusion because it has the same veggie content as a regular V8, but it throws fruits in there as well. Best of both worlds.

Big fan of the full sodium version. And as the Bear stated I think I sweat enough in training to not have to worry about the higher sodium

V8 is great for getting aditional veges and nutrients but don't drink much of it straight after a big training session. If it fills you up then you might not feel like eating the carbs and protein that you really need to recover after training.
