Do you have any idea how much grain, corn, etc. is feed to livestock.  If we cut back on meat consumption their would be a lot more grain for people to eat.   You're right the outlook doesn't look good but the sky isn't falling.  There are options.

I should add that we are unlikely to follow through with any of options available to us as we are not very active like that in the western world.  But they do exist.

I've read all the vegan stuff and a) its a boring way to eat and b) it doesn't give you the proper nutrition to stay healthy. We were not engineered to be vegans, we are omnivores.

1) Boring doesn't really matter when you are talking about survival

2) What are your sources that it is not a healthy way to eat or is jsut something you heard.  Not that I want to debate that.  I've done that enough on BT for a life time.

As long as I have some hot sauce, I can handle some Soylent Green.

On the serious tip, I blame the ethanol/biofuel movement (not biodiesel) and the Chinese.

Please don't quit investing in companies that have nothing to do with the survival of our planet and human race. Most of us would no longer have jobs!

The real root issue is the lack of investment in technologies to ensure human survival. Energy is one, because its crucial to food production. Not directly confronting the overpopulation encouraged by certain religions/cultures is another (the Chinese have ended up with their policy via desperation, but it also points to a root need for better contraception for men and women than what we have now).

Wasting money on 'investments' like the dot-com mess and now the housing mess are others. What's happened with investment - basically the getting rich quick schemes, now the housing market has collapsed in the Western world - is driving up the prices of commodities way above their market value - oil is the best (but not only) example - and the cascading effect that has on prices and spreading economic misery that *could* be avoided. We should be investing in companies that assure survival of our planet and the human race, not toss away our money in stuff that does 0 to assure long-term human survival.

There was someone, don't remember who, that spoke at the Field Museum a few years back.  He said that the global population would actually peak at around 8-8.5 billion people and then start to drop.  Said that even with 3rd world countries, education would catch up (mainly to women) and that birth rates would start to drop dramatically.

Then again, he said that wouldn't happen till about 2050+.

No. Because that's a disease.

I have read that as well. Besides, prices tripling means that technology will be improved to produce those fertilizers, or alternatives will be found. The free market will see to it.

If a collapse comes, I don't think it is from a lack of fertilizer. I worry far more about a lack of bees to pollinate crops. Fertilizer is relatively simple. We are not always very good about protecting species, particularly when we don't know why they are dying to begin with.
