A 25 foot or yard lap pool? 440yds(1320ft) is a 1/4 mile. In a 25ft pool, you are looking at swimming about 53 lengths. In a 25yd pool, it is slightly less than 18 lengths.

It's kind of confusing because normally a "lap" equals a full circuit of something, but in swimming a lap is generally only one length of the pool. Good luck today!

I've got it.....18 lenghts or 9 laps in a 25 yard lap pool = 1/4 mile swim

"Lengths" and "laps" are the same. I only used "lengths" so as not to confuse the meaning most people understand to be a "lap". Most people know a "lap" as the distance required to go around something, hence a complete circuit. Obviously, pools are not oval shapped. Therefore a "length" is the same as a "lap" since you've completed the distance.

Thanks for the clarification. I was using the term length as 25 yards going in one direction and a lap as a up and back. I just hope I acn do this!!

In competitive swimming, a swimming "mile" is 1650 short course yards or 66 lengths. So, 400 yards or 16 lengths, would be the rough equivalent of a 1/4 mile. Also, most triathlons that use pool swims use 400m for the 1/4 mile.

I can't believe that you just linked to that clip! That was my favourite movie in high school (Better Off Dead) and I watched it so much, it's wearing out!

Perhaps i should start a new thread, but my question is in keeping with the swimming theme.

I'm curious about 100m swim times. How close are times between open water swimming and lap swimming? I time myself in the pool, but don't know what is a good speed to aim for while training.

Don't forget that there won't be any walls to push off from in open water, nor lane ropes or lane lines to keep you straight. Also, if you do not practice picking your head up out of the water periodically to sight your target, it could make the going just a tad more difficult. These are some things that I've considered while swimming laps.

Isn't it great when a 10 year old thread is still helpful?

A mile hasn't changed in the last 10 years.
