Pre-race routine:

Woke up and peered out the window to see if we received the inch of snow that was forecast.
Dawn and I were both relieved that the ground was dry.
Went to the local coffee shop for coffee and bagel sandwiches.
Arrived in time to "unlock the doors", as both of us are such early birds.
Event warmup:

Rode the bike around the parking lot to make sure that it was in the gear that I wanted, as well as to make sure that gears, brakes, etc. worked properly.

Did a few laps in the pool to loosen up the body
Swim
  • 14m 54s
  • 549 meters
  • 02m 43s / 100 meters
Comments:

I dawdled a bit more in the locker room.
What would you do differently?:

Swim the entire distance using freestyle.
Transition 1

  • 14.74 mile/hr
Comments:

One HECK of a strong wind
Start: 22 mph / gusts = 35 mph
Finish: 28 mph / gusts = 36 mph

My choice of clothing was perfect, as well as taking the extra 20 seconds to secure shoe covers... I could still feel my toes at the end of the race, whereas others could not.
Transition 2

Run
  • 32m 2s
  • 3 miles
  • 10m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

... pretty easy to keep cool when the air temp is only in the low 40s

Kind of nice that I had a "train time out"... gave me a couple of minutes to stretch out after the bike ride and not lose any time.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

WIND!!!
COLD temperatures
Need to practice more intervals while swimming.

Event comments:

I am insane enough to brave the cold, again, next year because this was a very fun first race of the season.

Hey, Yoganerd, great race!   Geez, cold temps and a big wind, sounds brutal!  Good idea on the shoe covers!       I love that you were out there early on a cold morning when most people were still drinking coffee in their jammies (raises  hand).  Nice work!

What's a 'train time out'?

Tough weather conditions to race in..last two tris I did were in the 40's..yikes!

Swim intervals...good for us but hard to do.

Excellant work all around and glad you dressed right!

Very fun first race of the season is what this is all about. Hey you thinking of doing Brewhouse in August? Our plans are to do that with my brother, nephew, 3 of my kids and me.
