I dont know this person but it is always sad when we lose a fellow triathlete.

I just saw this too, wow. This seems to be happening a lot lately, and he was certainly not a novice. I wonder what happened. How horrible...

I saw them trying to rescucitate him as I was coming out of the water. It was a very choppy rough swim. It really puts things into perspective. My thoughts and prayers are going out to his family.

This is terrible.  Last year at St. A's now this year at GC.  I am willing to bet it was a undiagnosed  heart issue.   I feel for his family.  One minute you are a healthy person taking care of yourself, next you are getting dragged out of the water.  Enough to cause you pause, hug the kids & kiss the wife.

I feel for the family, and the kids being on site, that would be my worst nightmare.

God, please watch over the family.

If anyone knows of a memorial fund please let me know.

Ugh!  How horrible ... isn't this the third person that has died on this swim course in the last two years (Gulf Coast 08, IMFL '07 and IMFL '06)?  That said, I do not think it is the location as it is a relatively easy swim.

I looked up Patrick at a couple local races and he was an experienced athlete, having done GC and Tugaloo in the past.

Thoughts and prayers are with the family.

This is very disturbing. I remember when I heard about the janus athlete that drowned at IMFL this past year..then my mind took me back to seeing a swimmer struggling in the water, who just happened to be a female. Then I remember all the guilt I felt if I would have stopped just for a second to help, or atleast see if she were ok...how counterintuitive though in a race setting. I'm not sure if that was her that I saw struggling, but I can PROMISE i will never pass by another swimmer on a course who i think maybe in trouble and not stop just to be sure. I maybe the only dork that is willing to do that, but so be it.

Definately prayers for the family. My friend David who races lives next to them and i've requested more info to send flowers/etc to the family (mother with two kids 5 and 7). If he sends it to me i'll post here, or pm me for the info.

Don't think you are the only "dork" here - this is BT not ST ... which I think is the best thing about this site.  Triathlon is a sport that focuses on the single person, but it does not mean that it is singular.

Pass along the information when obtained, friend.  Truly a sad, sad situation.

Details below...

what and AWESOME opportunity we ALL have to show support to a fellow triathletes family during this very hard time. Please email me if you'd like to take care of a dinner for them, that way they arent flooded with emails. Beyond that it looks like a college funds being set up, etc... let's rock their world with support! Also, any thoughts on posting this on a "global" thread on this site? I want to give as much exposure and possibilities for donations and help as I can. Does anyone think we'd get a response?

Steven,
Here you go...
The family will be finalizing many details this week.
There will be a Memorial Service at the Kane's place of worship, Roswell United Methodist Church Saturday, May 17th at 4:00pm.
The church is located in Historic Roswell
814 Mimosa Boulevard, Roswell 30075
Www.rumc.com
Kristin has requested that Pat's body be cremated so there will not be a burial.
We will be setting up college funds for Colin and Andrew, details will be forthcoming.  She has requested not to bring her flowers at this time.
If you are interested in preparing a meal for the Kane family, please email Susan McCall at [email protected] and she will include you on the meal schedule.

Create a formal thread with all the pertinant information and I will sticky it in the Georgia Forum.

That aside, I think the powers that be would sticky a similar post under Triathlon talk. The best way to get that accomplished is to PM a Moderator (listed at the top of the forum). That would be the best way to get the necessary information out to the general triathlon public.

I think wanting to help someone who is struggling during a swim makes you a decent human being.

However, if you encounter a swimmer who appears to be struggling or failing, it is very important that you do not get close enough for them to grab onto you because now you are part of the problem. A drowning or panicked swimmer will latch on and you'll both drown. The best thing to do is immediately call over a lifeguard/kayaker and alert them to the potential problem. That is what they are there for. If you don't call them over right away and try to assist the other person instead, then you may quickly lose the ability to call for help. Best to call for help immediately.

If you must take action AND you are very strong swimmer, try to make eye contact, reassure the swimmer that help is on the way, and keep telling them to just tread water. If they move towards you, move away. Stay calm. You must be able to remain calm under extreme circumstances. If you start freaking, they will freak even more. I know very few people who could risk the proximity and chance of being used as a human flotation device, so please be very, very careful if you see someone flailing about.

Safety caution aside, this is very, very sad for his family and friends. What a tremendous emotional roller-coaster to go from excitement and elation about the event, to absolute loss.

You never know when it's your time, but, personally, I'd like my time to be when I am doing what I love.

It was ruled an accidental drowning. The family asked not to do an autopsy.

I actually heard that it was a heart attack from a friend of his familys and that he had heart disease in his family and had been warned not to let his heart rate get too high.

I misspoke. Your correct Gregg, I just confirmed with David, there was no autopsy completed per the families request.
