slightly off topic, i know, but i also know there are many of you out there who have done century rides. my husband and i are hoping to do our first in early may. technically, its a brevet (200k), just a hair over 100 miles, but somehow i doubt there are as many training programs for those as for centuries.

i'm back in tri training, so i may switch to a bike based program to help get enough miles in to be ready for the brevet. my husband, however, needs some sort of training schedule to work from. he is commuting by bike 1-3 days a week depending on the weather. his round trip ride is about 8-10 miles. am encouraging him to try running and maybe some weight training to help build his endurance.

any thoughts?

Hey autumn,

Glad to see you back around, with those precious little red-headed midgets.

I'm not sure how clean this is, but this is the schedule for my Team in Training participants from last year's Tahoe century. Eighteen weeks, of course the dates won't correspond with yours but you can change that. Let me know if you have any questions or need any help. You might want to up the mileage of the long ride by 10 miles or so, or add another week at 90-95 miles after week 16, and that should get you close to your double metric. (BTW, that extra 24 miles is going to feel like more than "just a hair over 100 miles")

Edit. I emailed it to the address on your website (mama@) as it was too big to post.

OOh, bear... could you e-mail me a copy, too? I've done centuries, but I'm hoping to do one, maybe two, many-day rides this summer. I'm not sure how many 60-miles days in a row that I have in me....

Or, just any advice that you have.... other than "get on your bike and ride it" which is probably the best advice, but I know that much

Especially if you have to do them twice ;-)

Sixty miles is a piece of cake, even day after day. After 75, though, my sit bones get a little achy, though I guess you can train that out of yourself as well.

Email done.

I am training for a 200 mile in 2 days ride this summer. If you go to http://www.cascade.org/EandR/stp/stp_mileage.cfmand click the link for STP you will find the training plan the event organisers recomend. If you can ride 200 in 2 days I'm sure you can do 125 in one.

I agree with everyone's comments so far. I put in 3-4 thousand miles a year and a century will still sap your A##. You will need to gradually build up to say doing 3-4 hour rides on the weekend, be sure to eat and drink more than you think you need, and go at a slower pace by a mile or two than you think you can sustain. One of the worst feelings is bonking on a long ride, a century for instance around mile 75 and still have in your case another 50 or so miles to go. One more piece of advice is not to be lured into turning it into a race, many times that happens at the front of the group as the studs try to break 5 hours or 4 hours in some cases, just find a group as early as possible that is also going at your speed and work together.

I'm thinking about doing the MS 150 Red River challenge approximately 6 weeks before my first Half IronMan. Im not sure if this is a good idea. The Half is supposed to be my peak race of the season. Anybody have any thoughts?

I did about 4 centuries last summer, but I'm not planning any for this summer - my first season for tris. The type of training you must do for centuries and triathlon is so different (unless you're training for a full ironman or you're not worried about your bike times). My understanding is that the MS150 is separated into 2 days, so each day, while long, isn't too much longer than the bike leg for your 1/2 IM. If you go an easy pace on both days of the MS 150, you'd be fine.

Thanks, I was thinking it might be a good test of my endurance and mental prep before the big race, but I might rethink it and do it as a bike focus week.

Happy Training!

Anyone still looking for a century training schedule, I've cleaned up mine and posted it here as an Excel File. This is a very simple schedule, designed for first timers looking to complete the century.

It's probably just your browser being goofy. Save it as whatever it wants, then find the file on your harddrive and change the extension back to .xls.

Autumn, I'm actually considering the same ride as you. I live 2 miles from where it starts and I'm thinking it would be a good excuse to do a lot of early season riding (you know, scare me into riding more). I probably won't decide for a while yet.

Is this just a one time ride for you and your husband or are you looking at the Paris-Breast-Paris ride somewhere down the road?
