In a thread the other day I copied a training program for "13 weeks to an IM". Except for the easy weeks it shows a long bike followed the next day by a long run. I realize the idea of learning to run on tired legs (like an extended brick), but what is the thought of putting that much pressure on your legs two days in a row? I usually try to have an easy workout in-between the longer ones.

In my opinion, once and awhile two hard workouts back to back are OK. I think it really depends on your conditioning. If you are just beginning and are not in great shape, I probably would not do it. I prefer Hard-Easy-Hard-Easy routine. Recovery is just as important as your workout.

I am less worried about Hard-Hard workouts if they are in different sports. Doing two Hard run days in a row can get you injured, but a hard bike and hard run probably would be OK.

It also depends on your age. When I was young-er, I was able to handle alot more than I do now. My recovery is slower.

The most difficult thing for me in doing a training plan is remembering to be flexible. The world is not over if you have to change the workout routine a little.

Thats just my opinion,

Good Luck

Last year I trained for a half IM using a training program where my long run was on Wednesday and my long bike was on Sat. I'm not sure if it was the fact that I didn't do back to back long workouts or if I was just cocky and lazy when it came to my training, but it was hard for me to do the run on the half IM(I'm also not a runner). For my IM I am doing long bikes on Sat and long runs on Sun and I can definitely tell my running is stronger than before. Hope that answered at least part of your question

I'm NOT positive on this, but I think "Going Long" promotes reversing the Long bike, long run on Saturday/Sunday to reduce risk of injury (they might have also had some other reasons). ie - LONG RUN on Saturday then LONG BIKE on Sunday.

But I agree with you Tom, seems like it would make you stronger and be more race specific to do the Bike then Run.

Actually, I think "Going Long" promotes not having your long bike and run in subsequent days because it is too much as your distance increases. They recommend a long run on a week day and several days before your long bike on the weekend. I endure the long bike/long run on Sat/ Sun b/c that is when I have the most free time to accomplish those workouts. However, they can be pretty demanding on the body.

If you prefer separating them and if your schedule allows it, then split them up!

In my 1/2 IM training, I did long bikes (plus a swim) on Saturdays (up to 4 hours) and long runs on Sundays (up to 2.25 hours).  It didn't bother me and I had to do it that way, or I'd never be at work!

I think it's a matter of preference, though it might be good to do some long runs on tired legs!

Good question. If I do double distance weekends, then I'll take Monday off. Now if only the weather would clear up so I could do them!

Key to IM training is to hit the essential workouts: The long swim,  long bike,  long run, every week.  Hit these workouts well-rested and make sure its a quality workout.

There is absolutely no reason IMO to put hard days back to back.  Most of the plans have the longest workouts on the weekends because the weekends are when the people have the most time.

If you can do a long run during the weekday, say wednesday and long bike on saturday, that will be awesome too.

IMO:  The key to running strong in an IM is not JUST the long run but also the long bricks that you will start to implement closer to your race day.   5-6 hr bike followed by 1 hour run or 2-3 hr rides followed by 2-2.5 hour runs will SPRING your running to a whole new level.

my 2 cents.

I should have mentioned that.  I also always took Mondays off.  And Mondays only
