I did the triatlon out there many years ago when the bike course went around part of Lake Samish (recreational race down't go on that loop) but didn't go into "old town"... Same run course though (which I always liked -- 90% trail/dirt). Too bad the bike course doesn't go up the "stair steps" (another way that gets directly back to the lake instead of going out into town). THAT would be fun...

For any one who hasn't done the race, it's a nice area, and though it seems remote, you're really close to hotels and such.

This was the last race I did 20+ years ago. I train there all the time though. In fact, yesterday I did the short course (less swim) as my brick workout. Both the long and short bike courses have some very challenging hills. The run is on a nice wide trail around the lake. A few small hills but is in the trees and is one of the most beautiful places you will ever run.

This was going to be my first tri, but an out of town wedding changed that.  I know several people that are doing it though.  That last section of the bike leg is steep.

I just posted a new triathlon in Bellingham: Lake Samish on August 16th. An alternative for those who can't do the Padden. Warmer time of year too.

I am hoping to do a Bellingham tri this year--some good friends live up there, so I could make a long weekend out of it!

Clear Lake, near Mt. Vernon, has a sprint in July too.

Padden is probably my favorite race but unfortunately I am going to miss it because I am down in SoCal for grad school.

I did the competitive division in 2005, but I always work on Saturdays, so I haven't competed the last two years     Get to the Park early for parking.  Gets very crowded.

If you consider the competitive division it is much, much tougher than the rec. Both the rec and comp bike courses have some serious hills. The last hill a mile out from the finish will be a real test just to keep from walking your bike. On the run, the first mile of the loop (1 lap rec, 2 laps comp) will really test already rubbery legs as it is anything but flat. The rec course will be enough for me.

Your comments about the bike made me a bit nervous as hills suck for my large cargo but whatever I'll go for it. Maybe somebody would like to say it wasn't bad at all?Laughing

I rode down the last hill of the bike course Saturday, it was fun.  Going the other direction might be a bit of a challenge, though there were people going up.

Looks like I'm pulling double duty on this one. I'm doing the comp division as a team (I get to bike)with my son and daughter, then later in the day doing the rec division solo along with my wife. It doesn't get any better.

Rode the course earlier this evening and though there are some serious hills there are also very long downhill glides that help to even things out a bit. It sure was cold out there. I hope things warm up a bit.

Parking will be tight but available with a bit of a walk if you don't get there early. There are three entries into the park, all on the north side of the lake. Western most off Wilkins St. there will be some parking and there is also a gravel lot (best bet if early). Middle entrance is where transition will be. Eastern most entrance (also entrance for the golf course) has a lot of parking but will put you a mile away from the event. I do not know how much parking will be available on the roads just outside the entrance. Here is a link to a map.

I would be all over it but I am driving up from Lk Stevens Saturday AM.  If your plans change I would be into carpooling from Everett.  If anybody else is going up and wants to meet in Everett, lets hook up.
