Subject: Taking "non-essentials" to triathlon
Doing my first tri this weekend (CapTex) and I have my list of things I need for the transitions. That's all good. But what about stuff I need but not for the race like car keys, cell phone, etc.? Do I keep these in my transition area and then wait until the area opens up again to go get them?

Bring a bag (a transition bag is a great accessory - I have one made by Tyr) - duffel bag, etc...and put your stuff in there. Just leave your bag at your transition spot (but make sure it's out of the way of your race gear).

People usually give them to family or friends spectating but I had the same problem last year when I went alone to a race. I just left the car keys in my transition bag and the wallet at home. I took only my license and insurance card and a $20 bill with me, which I also stashed in the t-bag, in a different pocket.

IMO, leave your cell at home. Until 15 years ago no one had one and they weren't needed. In case of an emergency there will be plenty of people there who can lend you theirs...

Good luck for your first tri! You'll have a blast!

Hide your key (assuming you don't have a trusted person to hold it) and leave your cel in the car. the less crap you have to pick up after the race, the better. I find that my brain is pretty shelled after racing, and I am apt to forget stuff....I left a wheel at a race once.

ride_like_u_stole_it - 2008-05-20 2:59 PM ... the less crap you have to pick up after the race, the better.

Truer words have never been typed.  It amazes me how many people complicate what should really be a simple transition from swim to bike and bike to run.

Less is MUCH more ... faster.

Look at the pro's, they have barely anything in their transition area.  Why?  ... because they know much of it is not necessary.

Think through each thing you absolutely know that you will need in T1 and T2.  If there is a chance you will not use it, do not bring it.
