For those in the area, there is a new triathlon this year at Lake Samish. It is August 16th. There is a Sprint, Try-A-Tri, Youth, and Open water swim. Looks like fun and at a nice time of the year!

I'll be there to do the sprint. It's the day before my birthday and the last chance to race the 35-39 age group. :-)

Too bad it isn't on your BD, you'd be the youngest in your AG.

Good point! Not that it would help me win the AG.

Anyone tested the waters yet? Just curious.

My prerace nerves are acting up so I might need to go jump in the lake next week.

I registered today.  I haven't swam at Samish yet, but I've been swimming at Padden lately.

It makes me nervous to swim in water shared by speedboats. Padden is perfect with only the occasion kayak to watch out for.

I have biked around the lake many, many times and it is one of the best, safest places to practice. Pretty flat with a few very small rises.

I hear you on the boats.  I did a couple swims in Lake Whatcom from a friend's house, swimming parallel to shore and it was not at all enjoyable.  I love being able to swim across and around Padden.  In fact, I'm going to head up there after work for a swim.

I haven't checked out the course at all apart from a map. What's the scoop? Hills? Cold water? Wetsuit?

Thanks!

While I have not been in Lake Samish, I assume that like most lakes in the area, you could get by without a wetsuit if you had to but it would be a little chilly.

The bike course is mostly flat with a few small rises here and there. Nothing along the way I would call a hill. One item of note though is that according to the website's map the ride is clockwise around the lake. This is opposite of the Lake Padden tri that goes around Lake Samish counterclockwise if you have done that.

The run is very flat.

Thanks for the info on the bike course. I will probably try it out before the race. From those registering online, looks like there will be a decent amount of participants.

I'm not going to get a chance to predrive the course or anything so thanks for the advice. :-)

I biked around Samish this past Wednesday. Found out when I got home that I went the wrong direction! That's okay, it'll be easier the other way. Jumped in the lake too. It's warm.

Now that is funny! :-) Thanks for the update. I'm trying to decide on whether or not to bring my wetsuit. I'll probably pack it. You know, just in case.
