Overcast
Total Time = 37m 23s
Overall Rank = 241/50K +
Age Group = 43
Age Group Rank = 4/368
Pre-race routine:

Not much, some toast and coffee... a little Gatorade. Arrived in Boulder fairly early but with not much spare time. Selected my race gear and saw Meg and Kilo Dave on our way over to the start.
Event warmup:

Not much of a warm up. Talked to Matt, Ben, Katie, Dave and Meg a bit and then tried to drop my bag over at the Fed-ex trucks. The line was ridiculous and I wouldn't have time to drop it off and get up to my wave. I found Dave and he agreed to bring my bag to the finish. At that point I only had about 3 minutes or so before the start so I jogged that way then detoured into the trees... tried to stride and dance my way into my wave corral. Once there I saw Mark, Steve and Ben. I decided to get up where Steve was and try to hang with him for the first mile.

Comments:

I am very happy to have been able to run this race. After missing the Barking Dog Duathlon 2 weeks ago because of my marathon injury, I did not want to miss another scheduled race!

Oh and another important note. The Bolder Boulder is not your typical 10K. Besides being one of if not the largest running event in the world, it is a difficult race as 10K's go. It is at altitude (5300 feet) and has some moderately difficult rolling hills that can be more than an annoyance.

I went out hard and ran my first mile just a few seconds faster than my plan, 5:36. Last year I developed a side stitch as I approached mile 2 and I lost time through miles 2 and the following hills through miles 3 and 4. Today I ran much better. I think my next 3 splits were all faster than last year. I arrived at the 5K mark at 18:36 - which was right on pace. I didn't have any time banked but If I could run the second half as well I would break 37 minutes. Mile 5 was great and ran that one at around 5:55... I knew that It was going to be very close and I would have to really dig on the last 1.2. Somehow, I just didn't have it. I felt like I was working really hard but my pace started to slow. Mile 6 is a gradual uphill and I just couldn't get my legs to turn over. After 6 there is a steep hill of about 600 meters that leads into the stadium. This little hill crushed me and my final loop into the stadium was totally uninspired. I lost my a potential sub 37 somewhere in the final mile and I lost a PR somewhere in the last .2 miles. I think my PR at the Bolder Boulder was 37:20 in 2005 and today I ran a 37:23. I ran about 90% of this race perfectly... but like in every race, the real race starts somewhere in the last 10% and today, I just didn't feel it or have it.
What would you do differently?:

Dig deeper into my head for the strength to run strong until the finish.

Also, I am also only 3 weeks removed from a PR marathon race that left me injured and I have not been able to run that well in my training since.

In reality, I ran pretty well and probably better than what I thought I could even the night before the race.
Post race
Warm down:

I'm a heavy sweater and today it was HUMID and Cold. I shivered in the stadium until Dave found us about 25 minutes after the race. I then put on some dry clothes and had a few beers with the BT crew and the F4 crew.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mental toughness and perhaps my injury (the verve-nerve).

Event comments:

As mega-races go, this is one of the best. Very organized and fun. However, I was shocked to see that they now charge you $2 to drop your bags at the FedEx trucks and the exchange of money was probably the reason for me not having time to drop my bag. This is price gouging. The race is already exorbitantly priced and the bag drop has always been an included service. I really hope this doesn't become the trend at other races too. Generally I would rate this race at around a 9 on a scale of 10, but the fee for the bag drop reduces the Dime score to a 6.5. Seriously, racing is getting more and more expensive. It will most definitely reduce the number of new and especially younger racers. If race directors continue their current greedy practices, eventually most races (and this is very true of triathlons) will become the domain of the geriatric population. This fitness boom will kill itself. Racing needs young blood and if you price them out, the boom will inevitably go bust.

Nice race. Only 3 secs off a PR with tired/injured legs is very impressive.

As always Dime, that's a fantastic race.  It was good to bump into you before hand and then hang out a bit afterwards as well.

Great race! I had wondered if your marathon injury was going to prevent you from running fast for a while. Glad to see you can still put up some fast times. I had intended to come over to your section after the race and meet you, but the weather was too crappy to hang around. I think you're eligible for an "ageless wonder" award for running a faster time than your age.

You had a great race, even if you didn't get the time you wanted, especially coming off that mary. Mental toughness at the end is always hard to dig up. You are smoking fast and always will be!

Great to see you were able to run it and stay close to PR even with what your body is fighting.
