Bike Stolen in Austin at CapTex Tri

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm posting this for a local club member. He had his bike stolen out of transition Sunday at the CapTex Tri...shocking to say the least!

Stolen: 2008 Cervelo P-3 from the transition area at Cap Tex Tri in Austin, May 24

Please circulate this throughout the triathlon and bike community and be on the lookout for my 2008 Cervelo P-3C that was stolen from the transition area at Cap Tex Tri on May 25th. It was located in the plus 50 area for the Olympic Tri and was the first bike on the aisle a few rows down from the Elite wave.

A bag was stolen from the next row from a friend who had to have his wife bring spare keys from Houston. There was a section of fence along the river trail that had been opened for some sort of maintenance after the swim was finished. There was no guard at this area and it was not possible to see the entire transition area from the front main gate because it was so large. 1700 bikes had originally been in the Olympic transition and a several hundred were left at the time I returned to get my gear.

My shoes that had been clipped in the pedals had been removed and were on the opposite side of the rack. The transition was completely emptied by the time the police arrived.

The bike was new in March and had only two races, Ironman Arizona on April 13th and Cap Tex Olympic on May 25.

2008 Cervelo P3 size 56, red black white, All Three Sports sticker on back of seat tube, “Ron Hayden” on both sides of the top tube but probably removed by now. SN SWP3C02M00141

The scary part is my bike is maybe 3-4 rows from where his was, first on rack too.

I was even sitting right near there, but I didn't see anything, don't even remember seeing a hole in the fence.

Frankly, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. I officiated a triathlon this weekend and there were zero volunteers or other race personnel in the transition area before, during, or after the race. Participants and civilians came and went as they pleased, finishers of the short course were taking their equipment while the long course participants were still coming in on the bike.

Hope he finds it, that's a fairly significant investment there. Whoever took it has good taste and knew what they were doing.

That sucks dude. Did you talk to the RD? for such a big race are the race organizers  taking any responsibility?

I volunteered at an Xterra this weekend - absolutely NO security in the transition area. None.  Girlfriends or spouses were milling about in transition during the race!

What?!  no boyfriends milling around?!

So do we start bringing a lock to tri's and snapping it on at T2?

I was just looking at some race photos. There was an adorable one of a toddler in the transition area during T1.

Ummmm ... what?

That stinks!  BTers...you should write your serial numbers down and keep them in a safe place.  It makes resale of stolen property a little more difficult if you circulate the info to lbs's, etc.

it is usually on the under side of the bottom bracket shell, but some manufacturers put it in different locations.

Damn, that sucks.

All of the races I've done except the sprint had really tight security in the transition areas.  Guess it comes from doing races with mostly the same organizations (Columbia Tri Assoc. and NA Sports).

Hopefully someone tracks it down or comes up with a lead.
