Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 6:15, got dressed, took the dog out, grabbed my stuff and was on the road by 7. Gu at 7:15 with some Gu2O. Got to the race site, parked, got my number and saw that they had tweaked the finish area a little from last year, it was farther back in the office building parking compared to last year.
Event warmup:

Ran the course backwards to the two mile mark so +/- 2.2 miles. Took a Gu at :15 to go along with some Gu2O. Stretched and got an idea of who was there at the race. Another fast field with the majority of the Howard County Striders group there.

Comments:

I ran this race last year at it's innaugural run and did okay taking 3rd in the 30-39 and set my all time 5k PR. Last year it was a crazy fast field and I only finished in the 23rd range since there were 5 or 6 people that ran in the 15's!! This year the field looked just as tough, but the finish line was farter back in the office complex and the start was farther back on the road which seemed a little odd. I was just hoping to be close to what I ran last year as I have really been slacking off since even before Boston so wasn't sure where my running fitness stood.

At the gun I take off and get right into the rhythm and work my way up to the front of the field. They are not pulling away quite as fast as they did last year and things got sorted out fairly quickly. I end up running with about 3 other people through the 1st mile marker as we climb the only real hill at 5:45. Stayed with 2 of them (top overall women and an older guy) as the young guy with us fell off. We stayed together until about the 1-3/4 mile mark and I started to fade a little. Went through mile 2 at 6:04.

I was feeling pretty cooked and because I did not have someone right there with me to push it I was feeling laxadaisical in my approach. I pushed as well as I could, but I was also sort of on cruise control just wanting to finish. I thought that there was an outside chance I could PR, but as we got closer to the finish knowing that it was further back than last year I knew that was out.

At the turn into the parking area I knew there was someone closing but I also knew that there was enough of a gap that I didn't need to sprint. Saw one of my son's friends from schools dad who is smokin' fast (finished 3rd overall in the 16's) give me the "you got it" as I was coming down the shoot and ended up staying ahead of the guy coming up. No PR, but still a solid race.
What would you do differently?:

I haven't done all that much (hardly any at all) speedwork since before Boston, so I've lost a little of my 5k pace, but still did okay.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some Gatorade, walked a little bit and stretched. Talked to a guy who had a Garmin and he said he measured 3.27 on his GPS, so the course was long. Another guy had 3.17 on his. So I went with that measurement. Based on THAT I would have set a PR in the 5k distance of around 18:19 or so. I'm not going to count that in my PR log, but it is still nice to know I went a hair faster than I thought!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training slacked off .......

Event comments:

Great race, well run, fast field and great prizes! $20 entry and you get a Zorrell tech tee and for 2nd place in the AG I got a gift card to a local running store!

No idea yet, probably $15.  With that and the tee, the $20 entry is covered! Tongue out

Would love to have some of your speed.  My goal this year was to break 8:00.  Well, did that already so now it is to break 7:00.  See if you can shoot some of that speed out Chicago way.

Great job.  Great job indeed!
