Total Time = 2h 52m 32s
Overall Rank = 136/
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 25/42
Pre-race routine:

Icing my huge swollen sprained ankle and pretending to nap.
Event warmup:

Since the biking leg was first, I did very little to prepare. Hence the total insanity that was to ensue: I'm maybe two minutes from my turn at the staggered start. Touch the rear tire: flat! Run the the SAG van, pump it up, run back into the line and take off. Left foot clicks in; right foot: cleat full of mud/grass from running to the bike pump: won't click in. So you can picture me in some messed up ballet move, pulling my foot (with the sprained ankle, of course) back to my rear to try to clean it out while still riding. I ended up riding 1.5 miles before I could click in. Optimism level: sarcastically low.
Swim
  • 21m 27s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swimming followed the bike, and on the second swim lap both legs completely cramped into straight logs, quads, hamstrings, calves, whatever ya got. Gone. Of no use! Seriously, without a wetsuit, I would have had serious difficulty staying afloat, and the water is my home!
Transition 1
  • 03m 18s
Comments:

Putting a wetsuit ON in transition is a new twist on life.
Bike
  • 1h 23m 34s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 17.80 mile/hr
Comments:

Nice course, beautiful hillsides with weathered silver cedar barns, perfectly sited.... I'm quite a tourist on the bike, probably always will be. There were tough hills and what seemed to be headwinds in every direction. Regardless, handled nutrition well, motored through, and wondered if I could run another 10K on a sprained ankle.
Transition 2
  • 03m 39s
Comments:

Hobbled about leaving the transition area, wondering if I ran on my ankle would I do permanent damage? Decided not to be paranoid or safe, and soldiered on.
Run
  • 1h 00m 40s
  • 6.55 miles
  • 09m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Quietly phoned in this performance on my wounded foot. No guilt At All. Consider it a victory over the DNF gods.
Post race
Event comments:

It wasn't exactly staring into the face of the abyss, but I was not looking forward to Sunday at this point. Decided to self-medicate: Advil gel caps and a frosty and a bad decision to not call the wife and I would wake up tomorrow to see what kind of man I was.

Advil and frosty?  Outstanding. Happy Saturday night, let's see what happens on Sunday. And I had the exact same thing happen on the swim, only I sank. Dammit.

Most excellent that you didn't DNF. It was brutal, and only the tough survived. You survived. Onto Sunday....

Another solid race.  I really liked the bike course.  I found it very comparable to N. Georgia.  And that run was brutal.  It was all about survival at that point of the day.
