Subject: Disney World suggestions - Running routes and off-site restaurants

Spending a long week there shortly with wife and kids, looking for a couple of specific recommendations:

  • Anyone have a favorite running route, between 4 and 8 miles in length, that they want to share? We're staying at POR, and I've used this route in the past, but would welcome some variety.
  • How about a favorite non-Disney family restaurant, preferably something local or even a small chain that we don't have here?

Any other random Disney tips and suggestions are welcome!

I like Pachinos on International drive (I think).  It pretty cheap, and right in the middle of all the chaos on I Drive.

I PMed you because I have way too much Disney advice to put on COJ.  I could make this thread longer than a TAN if I tried.

Favorite cheap eats in Orlando - Earl of Sandwich at Downtown Disney. Great place, fantastic sandwiches, doesn't cost much compared to everything else in Orlando.

My wife spent four months on the Disforums researching our trip... we ended up with an extra half week and way better park access than we could have ever afforded as a result.

The dis board is where I did most of my research as well.

Bear, have you seen this site - www.disneyrunning.com?  There is a forum (sadly, no COJ there) that has a section on where to run in Disney.  Let's see if this works...

Hey Bear, the times we have been to Disney we have just ran on the grounds around the hotel etc.  If you have the chance to get over to Universal CIty Walk.  If I remember right it is only about 10 miles or so.  There is a ton of stuff for the kids.  Go to Emeril's Restaurant.  It is well worth it.  I'll post a link at the end for Emeril's and Universal City Walk.  Have a good time.

We used to stay at Fort Wilderness when the kids were young.  Lots of wooded trails and not a lot of traffic.  As I recall, there's one big loop that encircles the campsite areas.

(I'm sure you know that early morning is the coolest tiime of the day here in FL and best for running.  Here in Sarasota we benefit from the breeze off the Gulf.  Inland in Orlando it can get broiling hot in the afternoon and into the evening.)

Haven't been to Orlando lately, except on business, so not sure what to recommend as far as non-Disney restaurants.  I always liked Race Rock on International Drive, but it closed down about a year ago.

How soon are you going?  My brother and his family are coming down next week and staying at the Grand Floridian.  They are very into everything Disney, plus my brother is a runner.  I can debrief them when they stop by Sarasota next weekend.

Mark

Don't have any specific recommendations for eating but make sure you make your reservations now if you plan at eating on-resort. They tend to fill up fast.

As far as running, it depends on where you are staying. There are tons and tons of paths and sidewalks around the resort area. + quite a few quiet roads that would be fine for running without having to worry about getting run over.
