Subject: Comments on my Road Bike with Aero Bars and My Aero Positon
I have a Specialized Allez Road bike with Profile Design clip on aero bars. I bought it used as my first descent road bike. I like it a lot. Yesterday I rode with some very good riders for the first time. I was out of my league, but it was a great work out for me. Both of the other riders road Tri bikes and routinely left me in the dust. That's o.k. because I know I haven't put in nearly enough time on the bike/road. I noticed that when they went into the aero position, they looked comfortable with their arms at 90 deg angles and elbows supported directly under their shoulders. When I go into the aero position, I am stretched out much further, my elbows in front of my shoulders. After awhile, my neck and shoulders start to ache. One of them mentioned this uncomfortable position and said switching to a shorter stem might make things easier. My current stem is a carbon fiber specialized stem of about 5.5 inches and looks appropriate for a standard road bike. Anyone care to comment? I really am not ready to buy a tri bike. I like my current bike alot, but this simple modification makes sense and seems like it might make my riding experience (and hopefully speed!) more enjoyable. Is this modification typical and appropriate? What else should I consider. Thanks!

What aerobars do you have?  Can you slide them back in the mounts so they are not so far in front of your drop bars?

There is a group of fitters that believe the back of your elbow should be directly below the front of your shoulder.  This is a bit more stretched out, but keeps my knees from banging my elbows.

I do plan to go for a full fitting when I get back from my trip.  Maybe you should look for a good local fitter and spend an hour or two with him.

My aerobars are Profile Design Airstryke with F-19 pads. The pads are mounted directly on top of the rams horn bar, so it looks like the only way to bring the pads closer to my body is to shorten the stem.

First, I'd suggest finding a fitter that can help you. Second, if there's not one nearby or if it's not in the budget then there are some things you can do yourself.

If you're getting aches in your shoulders then you might be too stretched out. A shorter stem would help. The stem that came with your bike is probably a standard size for your size bike which uses the geometry to set it up as a road bike, not a tri bike. A shorter stem would bring the handlebars closer to you which would enable you to rest your forearms on the pads, not your elbows. Also, a stem with a greater angle will bring everything up, a lot of it depends on how flexible you are.

Also, what's the position of your seat in the rails? Is it in the middle, front, or back? Moving your seat forward will also change your position. Moving the seat position might mean that you have to change your seat height but try it out first before moving your seat up or down, especially if you're not having any knee pain.

If you can't see a fit specialist then I'd try this first but one thing at a time so you can better narrow down what works. If you have any more questions let us know!

Thanks Mindy. All that makes sense. I have a good relationship with my LBS. I might just take it back to him for a good fitting. He is not a big fan of tri-bikes. A traditional road bike kinda guy. I really don't know what position my seat is, I'll have to look.
