Pre-race routine:

HOW MANY TIMES DO YOU GET THE CHANCE TO SET A WORLD RECORD?

That's what I was thinking late Thursday night when I decided to do this race, despite extremely underwhelming preparation (including not having a runnable Elvis suit).

Faeron was going to be part of the world-record-breaking attempt for most Elvi running in a marathon. I found myself with no plans for the weekend. So ... with my (rather distant past) long run being 16 miles and my total running mileage for the last few weeks in single digits, I decided to go for it! Besides ... how many people can say they ran a marathon as Elvis???

This pre-race routine included "put sideburns on face" and "create pompadour."

Here's the linkie to the pics if you don't want to suffer this race report :)

Event warmup:

From the expo through to waiting for shuttles at the finish, we Elvi were given SO MUCH LOVE. Everybody wanted to cheer us on and take our picture. It's good to be The King. We Elvi got special running numbers and bibs, pre-race party, sunglasses, our own tent at the marathon, photo opps at the starting line, and crazy good treatment! There were well over 100 Elvi (the old record was 48).

Warmup was posing for approximately 4,000,000 Elvi pictures.

Comments:

This was the funnest marathon I've ever run in my life. It was wonderful to go into it with no expectations, not even to finish. I ran so slowly--I knew if I were going to finish, I'd have to run very conservatively--that it was a joy and pleasure the whole way, and I made frequent stops for photo opps, dog petting, bathroom (nope, didn't even pee in my shoes this time!), and to groove with the FUNKALICIOUS bands that were playing (at least) every mile!

I ran a perfectly even race, splitting ~15:00/mi nearly every mile on a 1:00/1:00 run/walk. I did run the last mile straight through as is my custom, but dangit--I ALWAYS forget about that blasted 0.2! Ugh! Well, at least I didn't get lost ...

Everything went as perfectly as can be expected.
What would you do differently?:

Not a dadgum thing. It wasn't even possible to have more fun. I sucked every last minute and drop of fun I could out of this event.
Post race
Warm down:

Stuffed my face with everything on the bountiful food and drink tables at the finish line.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Huh. You mean, OTHER THAN not training? Perhaps no Elvis suit? Yes--I've also had a ridiculously busy last two weeks where I've been going through major grief, sleeplessness, and been on my feet unconscionably long, but ... what a gorgeous bright sparkle this day was in difficult times.

Big MWAH to Faeron for making it all possible. Her folks schlepped us around everywhere, from L.A. to S.D. and back, and she let me tag along and crash her hotel room. It was so awesome to see them waiting by the finish line, waving and cheering and taking pictures!

Event comments:

This has been far and away my favorite marathon. The course is relatively flat (there's some camber and some very minor hills), and I thought it was a beautiful and eclectic mix of San Diego's finest. There were a staggering number of volunteers. In fact, the attention and provisions were overwhelming--it was a 26.2-mile extravaganza of food, music, and raucous fun.

The citizens of San Diego turned out in force and were unbelievably supportive--people brought out coolers of beer, Gatorade, and snacks just to hand out to marathoners. And LOTS of cowbell! I lost count of the groups of cheerleaders--probably a set of 10-30 young girls every mile or so. The show was golden.

This is a race where you can be slow as ... well, me, and still have the cheering crowds, home made cookies offered to you, almost too many refreshment stops, etc. You were handed cold bottles of water and Accelerade and a wet towel upon finishing. Amazing. I do not have enough good things to say about this race. Super-organized, super-friendly, super-fun ... I am in awe, and I've run some pretty amazing destination marathons.

P.S. Hot Marines. :)

Congrats on your WR, finding a boat-load of fun, and continuing to spread your joy on this board.  I cannot imagine going 26 miles, even at a comfortable pace, in costume.

glad that I could have been of some assistance in lifting your spirits, you did an amazing job especially considering you hadn't been training for it for the last month or so.  Plus it was so much more fun to have you there even we didn't actually run together, it's not a race without at least one of the other cool kids, right?  We are so awesome for being world record holders!
