Extreme Veteran 505 Lakeland, FL | Subject: Do you take gels during a race? I finished my first triathlon this past Sunday and had a problem with taking a gel on the bike portion of the race. As soon as the gel hit my mouth, I began coughing and dry heaving, the coughing and dry heaving went on throughout the race and made it very tough to run. I know I broke the first rule of tri racing, don't do it unless you practiced it, but I had taken gels while mountain biking and washed them down with water, no problem. Do most people mix them with water or are they avoided all together because they are too sweet? What do most people take for a boost of energy? I don't think I will be taking gels in that form again. Any suggestions? |

I can't remember the name of the gels that I use, but I take them with water, due to the exact reasons you've outlined. If you find in training that no gels work for you then you could try energy drinks. My two cents... |

Champion 5868 Urbandale, IA | Subject: RE: Do you take gels during a race? I take gels straight and then wash down with water. It is a good way to make me drink, because I tend to drink too little if left to my own devices. I find it easier to take them when they are slightly warm than when they are cooler as they thin out a bit (I use Gu). If I don't use enough liquid I will get a little bit of the sweet/cotton mouth which I feel like makes me thirstier. Follow the golden rule whatever you do and don't race with anything you don't train with. I thought I could eat a banana between the swim and bike - ummmm, not so much. I found that out in training, though and learned that I can only use liquid for the first little while after I come out of the water. Try something different every time you train to find what works best for you. |

Expert 1023 Malvern, England | Subject: RE: Do you take gels during a race? I use gels. I think you answered your own question though - don't try anything you haven't trained with! Gels HAVE to be washed down with lots of water (read packet for suggested amount but I use 4-6oz) so they are not too concentrated in your gut. If you really don't like them though there is absolutely nothing wrong with just using a sports drink eg Gatorade or Gatorade Endurance which takes care of calories, salts and hydration. Often in shorter races I will take a gel just before the start and then just use Gatorade Endurance |

Expert 770 Long Island, NY | Subject: RE: Do you take gels during a race? I don't have a problem with gels, but I mix them up with Clif Shot Blocks on the bike. Before going out, I'll lick one side to get it sticky and stick a row of them right along the top tube. Every once in a while, I reach down and grab one and swig a drink when I need it. Yes, I clean the top tube after the ride and again before sticking the Blocks on, so it's not that gross. Well, maybe it is, but it works for me. |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Do you take gels during a race? I use them all the time with no problems. However, I did experience something similar in my first HIM when I came out of the swim and got up to speed on the bike I started my nutrition plan (gels on 45 minutes). The first one I did made me gag big time and I couldn't breathe! So I didn't take another one the whole time. Made for a long, painful race .... Later though I figured it out. After a longer swim I get really phlegmy. If I do not seriously clear my throat and hauck a big old nasty loogy (basically almost make myself throw up to clear the phlegm), it plagues me for a long time after. Since I've figured that out and done it I have not had any more issues. Plus I changed gel manufacturers as well. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Do you take gels during a race? Always practice what you will do at a race. If you are doing a sprint or Oly and drink Gatorade or calorie sports drink you may be able to get enough calories just from the drink. Gatorade or Gatorade Endurance is 50 calories per 8 oz. I take gels on the bike and on the run and even now swimming as I'm practicing my IM nutrition plan in all my training. |

Don't know if this makes me a doper, but so far, I haven't been asked for "a sample" at the finish. BTW: I'm not a blocks fan and like the gels. Gotta make sure my breathing is somewhat calmed down and I'm in a portion where I'm not in O2 debt at that exact moment. Flavor is also important as I don't like chocolate, vanilla, etc and like very little flavoring agent like berry. I prefer Clif gels. To each his own. |

Extreme Veteran 562 | Subject: RE: Do you take gels during a race? I have used gels, but you need water after. (only problem is getting them on my fingers and paper cuts in my mouth.) I have tired GU and Accel gels, seem to prefer the Accel. I did try shot bloks on my ride yesterday. While the shot bloks are a different consistancy and you need to chew, I found I used less. Thanks for the suggestion on sticking them to the bike! |

New user 529 | Subject: RE: Do you take gels during a race? I will consume a gel about 15-20 mins before the swim, and about every 45 mins after that, usually near the end of the bike during a sprint, and always washed down with water. I prefer the Powerbar gels, usually caramel or vanilla. Don't care for chocolate or fruit flavors. |

Pro 6582 Melbourne FL | Subject: RE: Do you take gels during a race? For any Tri I usually take one right before the swim. This past weekends Sprint I forgot to take one beforehand and was fine the whole race and only had a banana and coffee when I woke up. Now for longer distances nutrition will play a key and there are several methods to it depending ont he race length. If you haven't already read this to learn more about it. If you still want to do a gel on the bike, you can always premix it in a gel flask like this one. Hey, FYI. Think about coming over to the East coast (Melbourne) in early Oct for the Space Coast Triathlete Club/Health First Oly and Sprint triathlon , its a great race! |

I've never used one but you could give one of these a try www.gel-bot.com

Pro 6520 Bellingham, WA | Subject: RE: Do you take gels during a race? With my first Olympic distance coming up I experimented with gels in my training over the last week. I did distance events many years ago but nutrition was not as common during a race back then. I also have been running some 5k and 10K's building up to the season and I have a tendency to get nauseous and sometimes throwup at the end of a race when I push myself hard. I generally do not eat much if anything the morning of a race. All that being said, the gel (I put in a small container and mix 3 parts gel, 2 parts water as it is just to syrupy for my taste otherwise) has been great. I suck down about 3 ounces at the start of my biking/running and than another 3 ounces each 20-30 minutes. My stomach feels soooo much better throughout and especially at the end of workout. I have not had enough experience with it yet to comment on change in energy level as a result but I'm sure that it is contributing. As has been stated repeatedly, try it in practice and see what it does for you. |

Expert 810 Southeast | Subject: RE: Do you take gels during a race? I've used them with water while running, but for some reason my body really prefers solid food. Unfortunately, energy bars are pretty inconvenient on the run. I'm transitioning from marathons to triathlon slowly but surely, and my current though is to try energy bars on the bike, where they're easier to carry, and gels on the run. I've done the energy bars on the bike a few times, and found it to work well. I'm recovering from knee surgery, so haven't done a run longer than 10 miles in recent history, and at that distance, I just take in some fluid replacement drink, but don't eat at all. |

Champion 6993 Chicago, Illinois | Subject: RE: Do you take gels during a race? does gels really help over a oly? how fast does the cals hit your system? are they even needed? 2000 cals of gloucose I would think should get you threw the race. if they are needed I think a couple of seconds in t 1 and t2 would not hurt if you will make up more time. I know I have to be stopped to take a gel otherwise I will lose it. |

Bob 2194 Binghamton, NY | Subject: RE: Do you take gels during a race? I would say that replenishing glucose is necessary in any race over an hour. In an Oly I take a gel before the swim and take a hit off a gel flask every 20 min on the bike. I find that if I dilute 4 gels with water in a 10 oz flask they go down very easy, I still wash down with some water. Taking a swallow every 20 minutes equates to a little less than 2 gels in the bike leg. I will take a hit a few minutes before T2 and that pretty much carries me through the run leg. I'll take some water and Gatorade at the aid stations on the run. This diluted mixture works very well for me on my long rides as well. On a century ride I will load 12-14 gels in a 24 oz water bottle and take a hit every 20 minutes and mix in some solid food as well. It's nice to finish a 100+ mile ride and still have energy left to deal with the rest of the day. |

Member 21 | Subject: RE: Do you take gels during a race? During sprint Tri's i don't bother with anything apart from fluid, normally water, but will have banana, milo and a couple of bits of toast with peanut butter for breakfast. I did my first marathon recently, and on the 15 and 30 minute marks of the hour i would take 3 glucoden tablets, on the 45 a gel and on the hour 1/4 of a power bar. This coupled with water every 20 minutes or so, kept me going right to the end without too much of a worry. |
