Hey folks,

If you use a book to plan out your own training, do you mind sharing the title with me?

I have a background in swimming and nutrition, so I need to focus on the bike and run training a lot more. Plus, I'd like to better figure out my training between races. I think I'd need something geared towards an "intermediate" athlete because I have a couple tris under my belt and I'm ready to get a little more technical (working on speed rather than building a base from scratch).

Thanks!

I am currently using a book named; Training Plans For Multisport Athletes, by Gale Bernhardt. I am using the 13 weeks to a HIM plan. They have several plans, some are good for me, some not. I started with the 27 week to a HIM plan, but the structure of it did not factor in any rest days for my legs and I ended up injuring my knees. I took two weeks off to heal, started the 13 week plan and it seems to be working well. Of course, the true test will be when I do my HIM in August!

BT(this website) has some interesting plans also. I am considering one of these for my IM goal in 2009. I won't use the IM plan in the book I have now since it also does not factor any rest days for the legs.

Good luck in your search!

The Triathlete's Training Bible by Joel Friel is a common suggestion.  He has another book The Cyclist's Training Bible as well, if you want to go more sports specific.  For running, you can't go wrong with The Daniels Formula by Dr. Jack Daniels (no, not that one).

MuscleMomma - 2008-06-13 1:00 PM I really like Triathlete's Essential Week by Week Training guide by Fitzgerald.

I concur, this is the book I use for my HIM training plan in conjunction with "The Perfect Distance" by Tom Rodgers.

I also enjoyed reading "beIRONfit" by Don Fink, "The Triathlete's Guide to Mental Training" by Jim Taylor and Terri Schneider, "Endurance Sports Nutrition" by Suzanne Girard Eberle, and "Vegetarian Sports Nutrition" by Enette Larson-Meyer.

It's hard to go wrong with Joe Friel's Triathlete's Training Bible

Eric Harr's Triathlon in Eight Hours a Week is OK, but pales by comparison.
