Looking to do an OWS and either a trail run, trail ride, or road ride Friday evening.  I'm thinking about Holly Rec, over on Heron beach, then hit the McGinnis trail.

I'm planning to swim about 1600y, but the set up over there allows for just about any distance you want.  The McGinnis trail is 5miles.  I'm not a fast mtb'er.  In fact, I haven't been out on a trail since last August.  The road is available too.  Its somewhat hilly though.  I'm not planning a long ride, just something to get the lead out of the legs.

For any of you Flint area folks, its a good chance to get together.  Besides, its my birfday!

I may be up for a swim. I am renting a wetsuit and need to get a swim in with it before Big Fish. I don't know about any other work out though. What time were you thinking?

I'm usually out of the office at about 5pm.  So, we could meet over there at about 5:30 or so?  I'm flexible on time, assuming its after 5pm.

Good thinking on trying the wetsuit.

West sider here that will be in the Flint area tomorrow (6/18). I have my first OLY on Sat. (6/21) and need to try out my wetsuit (better late than never). I have never been to Holly Rec Area --what lake in the rec area is the best for swimming? Easy to find? Lifeguards on duty by chance?

Thanks!

Heron Lake is where I go.  There is a fairly long beach with markers.  I just swim that line.  I forget how long it is.  You could figure it out with the BT route tracker.

I've never seen a lifeguard on weekdays.

Another place to swim is Seven Lakes State Park, but it tends to get too many weeds.  Heron Beach is pretty clear.

I might be able to come and swim on Friday.  5:30 would probably work ok for me as long as nothing else at the office blows up.  i'll have to check and make sure but i'll think about it.

This is how I normally swim it.  Back and forth.

I remember that the water wasn't too deep just outside of the bouy line.

I haven't been out there to swim yet this season.

Grindle and Shorty, it sounds like the time works.  Hope to see you both.  Let me know if you need directions or anything.

Shorty, you gonna drag your dad out?  Are you looking to get any bike or run time on top of the swim?

matt,

thanks for the info on Herron Lake --I went, tried out the wetsuit in the water for about 30 minutes --water was clear, temp was comfortable with the wetsuit, and I just swam right inside the buoy line in an arc back and forth, back and forth. Nice location --you guys have a nice training area. Thanks again!

I'm glad you enjoyed it.  The road that goes straight from the entrance shack is great for intervals too.  Lots of small hills to burst up.  The traffic is usually too bad in there either.

Across the road, the McGinnis Lake Campground, not the municipal park, has a 5 mile trail for mtb or running.

Dont think Dad can make it, he's leaving for Philmont tomorrow I think with the boy scouts.  I'm gonna swim for sure, maybe run, dont think i'm gonna bike.  I might throw the tri bike in the car tonight, but what are the roads like around there? Is it worth bringing?

I really dont have any structured training i need to be doing til next week, so I'm pretty open for anything....Where shall we meet?

The road loop out there is mainly an out and back road ride, unless you want to cross dirt.  The loop is fairly hilly though.  Not long climbs, but lots of them.

Let's meet at Heron Beach.  When you drive into Holly Rec Area, you can turn right from the road to go into the Heron/main park, or left to go into McGinnis Lake Campground.  You are going to want to go right towards Heron.  At the ranger shack, you'll turn right again and that will take you to Heron Beach.  I'll be out there somewhere in the lot, or hanging out on the water's edge.

I'll plan to trail run, whether you do it or not.  The loop is about 5 miles of trail, plus a little road to get to the trail.  Probably a little over 6 miles total.

just picked up the wetsuit today and am looking forward to swimming. It looks like it might rain so we will have to see about swimming (lighting). Other wise I am in. What car should I look for? I drive a white Saab.

I'll be driving one of these two cars.  5:30 Heron Beach.

Joe, I grabbed my bike tools in case you can make it.

Thanks you two.  That was fun.

Also, I learned something about the fastest animal in MI.  Its a shortyy with a neon or escape bearing down on her.  That was crazy.  Closest call I've had in training.

Jason, I'll see you Sunday.

Leah, hopefully sometime in the next couple of weeks.
