Pre-race routine:

I am actually not even supposed to be writing this race report. I was only going to Kansas to jockstrap..HA!!! My plans changed when firstnet, mutri, Jazz82482 and I got to the expo on Friday . All the hype and excitement really got to me! I thought to myself...I came all the way to Kansas to jockstrap? HTFU girl and just do the race. The next thing I knew I found myself at the registration table signing up for my first HIM. The good thing is that I just happen to bring all my race gear to Kansas with me. So I was set and ready to race!

Event warmup:

Got up at 4:00ish am and had half a bagel with peanut butter, banana and decaf coffee. Drank a bottle of water. Stomach was feeling a bit uneasy. Packed my transition bag and headed down. Didn't do anything for a warm-up because by the time we got down to transition and got my wetsuit on the first wave was already going in. I was in the 4th one. Was a bit nervous that I didn't get in the water for a warm-up swim.
Swim
  • 51m 25s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was feeling surprisingly confident that I could do the swim in a reasonable time if my sighting was on. Swam about a mile the day before and my sighting was for sheeot. Swam all over the place. I took this swim pretty easy..didn't let my heart rate get up to high and had just decided before I got in to take it nice and easy and just finish! It felt like I was in that water forever. Got kicked and punched a few times, but overall was very calm on this swim.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Probably work on pushing a bit harder next time.
Transition 1
  • 02m 33s
Comments:

A little slower than I wanted to be. Struggled to get my socks on and my helmet wouldn't clip. And why was everyone walking with their bikes???
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.

Comments:

We had driven most of this course the night before so I knew what to expect. Lots'o hills!! Hard going up... but man the ride down those hills was awesome. Was nervous about my nutrition plan for this race but it was spot on!! I downed lots of endurance gatorade, water and 2 endurolytes every hour. Just wanted to stay hydrated with the heat. And even though I gag on gels..I had a few of those too!! Took the first part of the course I went out a little to hard...could feel it in the legs and had to remind myself that I had 13.1 miles to run afterwards.
The 2nd out and back was uphill and into the wind a little tough for me. The 3rd leg was also tough with wind and hills on the way out. Was ready to get off my bike by mile 40. But overall ...I felt great on this ride.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to catch the gatorade bottles on the handoff!
Transition 2
  • 03m 2s
Comments:

Firstnet and mutri asked me WTF took me so long in at this transition. I believe it was because it was the first and only time I went pee.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 2h 01m 30s
  • 11 miles
  • 11m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

Couldn't believe how great my legs felt off the bike. Took the whole run at a nice easy pace and just enjoyed the course. Noticed the sky getting a little dark around mile 10 and started to see lightening. At mile 11 some guy yelled at me from the croud and said "push it hard to the finish"..I'm thinkin WTF..I have 2 more miles to go. The part that I didn't hear was that they were ending the race early because of the storms. I did make it to the finish chute and they did announce my name, but as of now I am only a 68.3 finisher.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Wanted a massage, but had closed up already...so we went and had some post-race cold pizza. Grabbed our bikes and gear and headed back to the campsite to dry off. Met up with our neighbors at the campsite known as the IronTexas group (Pro Andrea Fisher and crew). They felt bad that we didn't get to finish our race, so when they saw the truck go by collecting the mile markers..they bombarded it, grabbed mile marker 1, 2 and 3 and staged a finsh for us. Hilarious group they were. They even invited us down to Texas to race with them in October.

Event comments:

Had an absolute blast. I have to send out big thank you to firstnet911 mutri and Jazz82482 for their total support that they gave me leading up to the race. I heart my BT friends! You guys rock! I am a HALF IRONMAN!! wooooohoooooooooooo!! (Technically only a 68.3 half ironman) but I'll take it! :)

You are a HALF-IRON woman- you finished with the Texas folks- that was better than the 'real' finisher's chute anyways!!

It was so awesome hanging out with you the weekend. You really made it a blast for me. I still can't believe you signed up the day before and RACED! How awesome!

Now you can get those extra 2 miles at high cliff this weekend, right?!

You just HAPPENED to have all your race gear with you? Sounds to me like somebody was thinking about this before they left. Awesome job and congrats on being a 1/2 Ironman. We will see you this weekend, where you can do it all over again!

The good thing is that I just happen to bring all my race gear to Kansas with me.

I totally get this.  I always have my stuff with me too.  I never know when I might need to hurry to the nearest phone booth and change into my race attire!

Man, you had an awesome race, and signing up on the spot is bad-azz, no doubt about that.

Great job out there! Definitely hard core to sign up for that last minute, but very cool! Congrats on doing so well.

I saw a picture of your 68.3 sticker somewhere. That's classic!

Sorry you didn't get to do the whole run, but I'm glad you had a good time in KS!
