Okay, so I took out a small loan to fill the two-gallon gas can for my mower.  On the way home, some of the gas spilled in my trunk, and my car now smells.  What should I do?...

Since your car suddenly developed a nose, you may want to shower more often?

I once had a leaky cooler with raw pork steaks in it leak into my old car.   it stunk really bad so here is what i did.    I took the trunk liner out.   I scrubbed the effected area with soap and water with a scrub brush.   I let it dry out in the sun for a few hours.  I also sprayed it with Ozium - a professional strength deodorizer- you used to be able to get it in automotive section of Walmart or Target, or at auto parts stores.   I think you can also get it at Walgreens as well.

Hope that helps

Josh

I borrowed my buddy's BMW once and accidentally broke a gallon jug of Cuervo in the trunk. Not good times. Bad times. On several levels.

Sharkie - 2008-06-19 12:14 PM Kitty litter the trunk..  and give it a week or so for the smell to dissipate..

x2

Pour in kitty litter and let it sit for a few hours than shop vac or vacuum it up.  The kitty litter will absorb any moisture/odor/remains.

I once bought prizes for a golf outing, including a couple of bottles of whisky. On the way back from the store, I got my car washed, and noticed the guy toweling it off called other people over and were laughing. Yes, I had whisky leaking from my trunk.

I kind of liked the smell though, so different situation. I suggest renting/buying a carpet shampoo machine with the wand on a hose and trying to clean it. Then air dry it every chance you get. It will suck for a while.

Take out the liner and install a new one.

Your car is only 6 years old. Keep it in good shape - meaning, remove the pieces that contain gas fumes when they shouldn't. Seriously. Getting a new trunk bed liner will cost you a couple of hundred bucks at the most, and you can install it yourself (carefully).

My mother left or hid a gallon of ice cream in the spare tire well of her car (don't ask). Needless to say the car continued to smell like spoiled milk 8 years later when my brother-in-law finally totaled the car.

Aw c'mon.  Only four "match" votes?  Where's the ka-boom?  There was supposed to be an Earth-shattering kaboom.  Smile

Baking soda soaks up oil/gas very well. Pour a bunch on and let it sit a few days. You can rub it in if you want, but leave a thick coat. Vacuum up and the smell should be gone.

I do my own maintenance on my oil burner at home and lay down a bit under the work area where I occasionally get spills. Once I wipe it up, no odor at all.

One time I had a huge mess and the heating oil spilled on to an unpainted section of the concrete floor. BAD news. Left a pile of baking soda on it for a few days and it wicked the oil right out of the concrete.
