Overcast
Total Time = 52m 19s
Overall Rank = 9/17
Age Group = 30-39
Age Group Rank = 2/3
Pre-race routine:

Drank about 1/2 a bottle of Heed and took a gel. Just relaxed quite nicely.
Event warmup:

Easy swim to get warmed up enough so the chilly water wouldn't take my breath away when we got started.
Swim
  • 28m 30s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was in traffic almost the entire first lap and had a lot of trouble finding any rhythm. My swim felt a little bit rusty because I haven't been swimming very regularly and this was my first competitive open water swim this year. The second lap, I found smooth water with no traffic and my stroke started to click. All in all, I can't complain.
What would you do differently?:

Start up front.
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

Everything about my transition was average. That's ok with me though. I was just looking to get a hard workout in.
What would you do differently?:

Remember Bodyglide for my ankles and calves. Have a water bottle to rinse the sand off my feet.
Run
  • 21m 48s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Hilly out and back. Don't underestimate my incredibly inept description of hilly. It's a tough 5k course. I would have saved at least a minute if I hadn't stopped to pee. Easily could have had a PR and I never would have expected it.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I REALLY had to pee. The only question was whether I would do it behind a boat in a nice private little pee spot or while running so everyone see it. I'm glad I stopped :)
Post race
Warm down:

About a 1/2 mile walk and some stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Only me. I can't complain about my performance at all. My only goal was to get a good hard workout. I did that and even surprised myself a bit on the run.

Event comments:

This is a very nice low key event during the week. It's nothing fancy, but it's a great workout for beginner triathletes who want to try an open water swim as well as seasoned triathletes looking for a strong workout.

Nice job Ben!  you would have been under 7-min miles for sure if only you didn't have to stop to pee.  I would have made the pit stop too!
