Just curious if anyone else has pics or stories or feedback on tenting it or sleeping in your car the night before a race that was just far enough away that you wouldn't drive the morning of, but not so far away that you couldn't head home after the race?  And of course, you didn't feel like shelling out the 'green'.

Here's a shot of my "motel" for a NC mountain race that was about a 2-1/2 hour drive away.  Just far enough away that I didn't feel like getting up at 3:30am.  It turned out to be one of the best things I've ever done.  Drove out the night before, got front-row parking at the site, got 8 hours of sleep and woke up fresh and ready to go!

And I don't care about the "image" or "stereotype"...  I LOVE our Honda Odyssey minivan!!!  Cool

At the race I did 2 weekends ago, there were campsites right near the race site, so we camped out - $16 a night for up to 8 people per site. Can't beat that. I slept well.

at the last two races: one race, camped about 5 miles from the race, split cost with another triathlete. 2nd race, stayed with some friends who live in that town, free! spent lots of money on food, but that is normal whether or not i race

I did similar in my Plymouth Voyager back in... '92? Drove down to Hagg Lake the night before an Oly and spent the night in the back of the van with my bike. Of course I didn't have the nice air mattress though.

Your cervelo looks pretty sweet with the yellow tire sidewalls to match the bike lettering!

I don't race much (maybe 3-4 big races for the year) and for those I like to have a nice place to rest; after all I usually invested a lot of time traiing for it. for B and C races I usually race locally and no farther than a few hrs drive hence I dont need a place to stay, for those that the drive might be longer I usually crash with friends or stay in a cheap hotel

I stayed in a mobile home for IMLP.  For $750 for the week, we had 2 bedrooms, a kitchen, a bath, and a small family room area, as oposed to my friends that had to pay $2000 for a hotel room!  It was awesome...

I have named the bike 'Bombus' which is the scientific name for a... BUMBLEBEE!  Because it's black and yellow and when I'm on it, I'm big, fuzzy (thereby the screen name) and can fly pretty quickly.  Large, fuzzy, pretty fast, black & yellow - that's a bumblebee.

We camp at races any time we can. So much easier to be close to the race venue and not have to worry about a parking spot or getting up early to drive. Our little RV works perfectly.

I plan on bringing a tent or just sleeping in my pickup bed covered by a cap for a race in Sept. Normally I'd tow the travel trailer, but with the price of diesel I'll rough it for that race since I'll be on my own, and it will be only a one night stand.

If I traveled with the family I'd stay in a campground if possible with the trailer. For Muncie next weekend and since it's just the wife and I going I'll be in a hotel, that doesn't happen often though as I can't stand shelling out the money for hotels. Plus I like my home on wheels better.

My parents, wife, and kids all took my parents' Hawkins motor coach to my first HIM back in May.  It was the best idea I've ever had for a race.  I was 1.5 miles from the race site, lakefront, the campground was on the bike route.  Campground cost was $80 for the weekend versus $70/night at the hotel 30 miles away.  Thus, we all stayed there for $80 plus the cost of diesel.  Oh, plus the cost of the motor coach

Even though I didn't sleep that well (nerves), I didn't have to worry about traffic, traveling to the site, parking, etc.   I rolled out of bed, and rolled over to the racesite.  Next time, I'm seriously thinking about camping.
