Subject: Aero helmet without Aero wheels?
How ridiculous is it going to look if I buy an Aero helmet and I am still on my stock Eastons. They are deep rims but should I wait till I get some Zipps or Blackwells? I worked in the CDA bike transistion and there were a LOT of MOPs & BOPs that came in wearing them. Will an Aero helmet do anything other than make me LOOK faster?

A properly fitted aero helmet will do a lot more bang for the buck then a pair of zipps.

An aero helmet will do the same to your speed regardless of whether you're adding on top of aero wheels or not. First, though, make sure you've got your position dialed in (for aerodynamics and comfort, and some of that comfort comes with being in the position in practice) and that you can stay IN that position. The aero helmet will be of greatest benefit if you don't have to be moving your head around a lot. That's one of the reasons that I tend to put wheels above a helmet -- the wheels don't care what position you're in... Regardless, though, the "bang for the buck" factor definitely goes to the helmet.

Will you look like a poseur for wearing one? No, you'll look like a triathlete. As for looking "ridiculous", well... Don't we all?

A friend of mine stated that a triathlon is probably the only place that you can still look cool hanging out wearing spandex......

I am putting the wheels off until next year since it is a big ticket item.....my aero helmet is in the mail and I am still on the stock Shimano wheels. After buying the $2000 bike, I am having a hard time justifying the $1500 wheels to the wife. The $200 helmet goes over easier, hehehe

Get the helmet and wear it with pride. You have to wear a helmet anyway, might as well have one that helps you.
