Is there any reason not to do a long run on the day, either before or after a flight?

If so, how long before or after the flight is safe?

I do both quite often. There is really no better way to settle jet lag. Enjoy!

I flew from Boston to Phoenix 4 hours after finishing the Boston Marathon. It's running, not scuba diving! The worst that can happen are leg cramps from sitting.

I travel a LOT for work.  (I'm in a hotel in Madrid right now.)  I do this (long run before or after flight) all the time.  In fact, I did it today.

Mostly it is not a problem.  And running after a long flight can be a really nice way to recover from the flight.  A long run just before a long flight (> 5 hours) can sometimes be a problem, just because the conditions for recovery on a plane are not exactly ideal -- awful food, extremely low humidity, and very little opportunity to get blood flowing in your legs.  But I've done it many times, and as long as you take precautions (stretch well before flight, bring your own food and water), and actively stretch and flex your legs during the flight, you should be fine.

I got off a redeye and ran an ultra. It felt good.

Since I'm usually off the mornings before my flights, that's where I try to put in long runs. It eats up some of the morning time and after a good meal, it's lights out for the whole flight.
