Overall Rank = 46/104
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 4/10
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30 for coffee and toast, stretched and checked my gear one last time before heading out.
Event warmup:

Talked to a few people, set up my transition stuff, suited up and headed for the water. Since swimming is my weak link I did the typical burp, dunk, float and swim. The water was really rough and I wanted to get used to the whole course so probably swam at least 600 yards over three times before my wave. I was nervous at the beginning, but settled down (or so I thought).

My goggles leaked at one point and my contact floated out. I found it on the inside of my goggles and headed to the bathroom to insert it. Note to self: bring a spare pair in my transition bag!
Swim
  • 09m 6s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was in Wave 3 and there were 3 waves behind me. I started out with my group, but quickly freaked out seeing all of the yellow swim caps surrounding me. I got kicked and grabbed and I was worried about doing the same to others. After some fs, I had to flip over on my back to gain composure. This went on for the remainder of the race. I went so far outside of the buoys to avoid other humans I am sure I swam at least another 100 yards! I wasn't alone. The funny thing is all I could think about is "I am actually going to make it, this isn't so bad". The next thing I knew I was running up the ramp and was done with the toughtest part of my day.
What would you do differently?:

Honestly, I needed to experience the chaos. I think the only way to get better is to keep doing it.
Transition 1
  • 02m 41s
Comments:

I honestly have no idea why it takes me so darn long to get through transitions. The good news is I did not forget anything.
What would you do differently?:

Get faster.
Bike
  • 1h 00m 16s
  • 18.3 miles
  • 18.22 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a really great ride. I was trying to remain more in control than the super sprint to leave something for the run which is what my bike coach suggested. I am not sure this was the greatest strategy, but I was just below LT so it was more comfortable.
What would you do differently?:

Having tried the maintain the HR thing, I think I would push harder. This strategy did not save anything additional for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

Slow poke.
What would you do differently?:

Not sit on the ground to take off my bike shoes and put on my running shoes. I think it takes too long.
Run
  • 25m 43s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 08m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

I hate cross country courses, this was another hard day. I felt like crap the entire run and was PO'ed over the course. The last little bit was asphalt and I was a happy gal.
What would you do differently?:

Find an asphalt run!
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some water and walked around talking to a few people

Checked the results, I was 4/10 AG and 9/30 Gender. Not as good as a couple of weeks ago so more work to do on the swim and transitions (these really killed my performance).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Experience with only one super sprint and sprint under my belt I know I need to do a lot more work. I have to say I am happy with the results overall. Even though my swim was poor I finished it without needing to rest or completely losing it, even though my run was really not up to its usual standards, I know I can bring it together next time.

Event comments:

This was a first year race in a small community in Northern WI. It was extremely well run and the volunteers and organizers were totally enthusiastic. The lake was weed free, the bike course scenic. The run needs some work, but they promised to do that. I will be doing this again next year.

Super Job Suzy! Awesome bike Avg! So the run was all  on grass? That would be hard!

Way to go!

Excellent Race Suzy! Now you have two swims under your belt - you should be very proud of your accomplishments!

Thanks Beth!  I am pretty happy with the progress.  Eighteen months ago, putting my face in the water was a big deal.  Lots to do, but it is the little forward steps that keep me motivated.

Great race, Suzy!! So great, now I'm jealous of your run *and* bike times (and actually, that swim looked pretty speedy to me...). I hope you do find some more races to do this season.

Very well done!

" I think the only way to get better is to keep doing it."

Yep, that's pretty much the story with swimming and especially with OWS.
